So, would a GTX 950 do the job?

I need a small (form factor) GPU for my media server, which is able to run media stuff and movies (no games) on my UHD tv in 60hz. The onboard IGPU in my Xeon cpu only supports up to 30hz. Would a GTX950 do the job or would i be better with my onboard GPU and go for full hd 60hz?

Thanks

Yes it will do just fine. You could go lower still but check that it's got the correct HDMI, DVI or DisplayPort version to support your resolution at the refresh rate.

Yeah.. Thats the problem.. It was about the only one with HDMI 2.0..

Not more than the gtx950.. :)

wont even get 30FPS @ 4k with that GPU...

you need around a 970/390 to play any game at 30FPS.

for pure media it will be NO PROBLEM. Even a AMD A10 7850k APU can run 4k movies just fine.

also, for TVs... there is pretty much no actual 60FPS 4k content out yet... and probably wont. because it will require the internal specs of a TV (many TVs has inbuilt decoders), to be so beefy that the TV will need a proper cooling fan. which makes noise. which is a big taboo for livingroom devices..

Well.. You are properbly right.. Since it is only streaming content which is in 30 fps, which the igpu can do, i would not benefit from buying a gpu.. Didn't think of that..

Youtube does 4k @ 60fps does it not? My ivy doesn't much like doing 4k youtube without stuttering. Maybe it's chrome, maybe its skype and chrome running, I dunno, but i just opened up a 4k youtube video that seemed to be 60fps and it was stuttering a bit.
