Pascal, even if it comes out this year as promised, is still 9 months away. Plus, a GTX 980 Ti will be more than enough for 1440p, and can even handle 4K. Unless you're looking for a 4K card, I wouldn't wait for Pascal.

If you wait, you'll always be waiting. Get the 980 Ti then sell it when Pascal comes out. We don't know anything more about Pascal than you do.

Wait for Pascal, then get a 980ti for a much lower price. Best of both worlds, I say.

On a serious note, the 980ti is a very capable card, and unless you're looking to game at resolution at or above 4k, Pascal probably won't give you massive performance gains, and newer cards ALWAYS represent poorer value.

I would get a 980 Ti. The only real improvement with Pascal is FP64 performance, which will not affect your gameplay. Even if it does have a big improvement, you'll be good for a while unless you play at 4K.

There are rumors that Nvidia is going to finally tell something official on CES 2016 that is going to take place next week. If they say that Pascal is coming out in early Q2 then maybe you should wait, but otherwise I would just take 980 Ti. The most demanding games like Witcher 3 or AC: Syndicate are running on 80-90 FPS in 1080p if you are not using some useless Hairworks or PCSS shadows that take half of your performance at very little visual improvement. And those kind of games are in very small minority, for very most of games 980 Ti is overkill even for 1440p. You can sell 980 Ti later and switch to Pascal, there is no problem.

You can also consider some temporary card and wait for Pascal with it. You can buy something much cheaper than 980 Ti, it will be much better than 580 anyway.

Anyway, waiting most likely over 6 months on 5 year old card is by far the worst solution of all.

I would suggest you wait for Pascal. Don't listen to the hype naysays. This is the first time since the 700 series that they're chaning the nanometer process.  Also HBM. It's better to jump on the bandwagon early.

I am getting a 970 to hold me over (it will be a good hand me down for my stream pc) and then I will get the 980ti tier pascal

Actually first time since the 600 series, and the 600 series was an enormous upgrade over the 500 series. That drop from 40 nm to 28 nm was so huge for performance that Nvidia started selling their full upper midrange chip (GK104) under the 80 name for $500+ and created a new line Titan for their highend chips. The GTX 680 was actually supposed to be released as the GTX 670 Ti, but since it was 40% faster than the 580 they just called it the 680. But Titan was the true successor to the 580, and it was like 100% more powerful.

Buying a 970 isn't a bad idea at all to wait it out. I'd even go for a $250 EVGA B-Stock 970 if that's the plan.

Thanks for agreeing and the correction.

If pascal wasn't going to change the nanometer process I would say hell yeah get a 980ti, those things rule.

But I'd rather spend $700 on something that wont become instantly outdated.

Why would a 980 Ti become "instantly" outdated? Is it going to magically drop 30FPS in all games the moment Pascal releases?

Because of it's GDDR5 memory and it's 28nm process. Pascal will have HBM models and possibly GDDRX.

Again, I only say this because I would want the best of the best for the highest price you can spend on a PC part. (excluding things like quadros or titans.)
