Referance 970

TorzyBoy

Is the gtx 970 with referance cooler worth it? I know the 3.5GB video memory thing, but I wonder if I should get it now that it is on sale. I don't think it is a big differance between in games that I use the referance card over the other once that evga, asus and msi offers. I am just personaly a big fan of Nvidia stuff. Have a shield, so thats why I want a Nvidia GPU.

Her are the parts I plan to use:

i5 6500

Gigabyte GA-Z170 ATX motherboard

Corsair vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB)

Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD

WD blue 1TB

Nvidia Geforce GTX 970

NZXT S340 (black)

Corsair RM 650W 80+ gold PSU

Unless completely for looks, no.

Almost all other models perform cooler and are better yet are cheaper.

You'll still get an NVIDIA GPU in an aftermarket 970... Anyways, a R9-390 is a better option at that price point. Better performance, lower price. No use in fanboying unless you want to be no better than an Apple lover... I'm looking at you, Austin Evans!

This too.

If the 390 is cheaper or only slightly more expensive, it is a better GPU.

Go for aftermarket coolers unless it's a SLI config or you just want it for looks, aftermarkets have better cooling performance and a lot of them are much quieter with zero RPM on idle.

Though for the whole build I would replace that PSU, not bad just much better PSUs available at cheaper or same pricing

I have recently experienced a reference cooler on my Titan X (it's since been replaced with an ACX 2.0), I can say that I was pleasently surprised by its performance. If it's for really cheap, I would go for it. However, if you find that you're wanting to replace the cooler with something like an Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme IV, it probably would have been cheaper to get a card with an aftermarket cooler anyway.

Just get a non-reference 970. It will run cooler and overclock more.

He has an Nvidia shield, so stop suggesting an R9 390.

970 isn't very good when you bump up the resolution..

390 would do far better in those regards but again, it's your choice.

I personally recommend getting a G1 Gaming from Gigabyte and overclocking the shit out of it.

Not yet, I will at some point. It was more for thermals than anything. It was sitting at 83C with the reference cooler, but now it's sitting at about 70ishC.

reference coolers are only good in sli or in sff , and if you really want low temps in  sli (say, 4 or 3 card), consider watercooling

and get a 980 or 980ti for 1440p and 4k, if you want to stay on team green

It was only throttling slightly, going down from a boost clock of 1164MHz to 1073MHz, so not a massive difference. Please don't quote me on these numbers, they're from memory.
