Out of state craigslist selling. Only 16. Is this legit?

Bit8xPr0

I listed my computer on Craigslist for $400 someone from Texas contacted me and said they'd give me a check and that once it's cleared in the account "whatever that means" they'd arrange a pick up

It could be legit but I feel that at 16 he doesnt know what he is doing, therefore leading to possibly paying off in small amounts or none at all.

Looks kinda shady, on craigslist, no bank account and only 16. If you decide to meet up somewhere do it during the day in a populated area, and make sure your with someone.

So I've gotten "certified checks" before, if someone says they're paying you with a check 9 out of 10 times it's a scam, they wait till the money is in your account, then they bounce the check refunding them the money and leaving you at the loss.

No, I'm 16 and never dealt with banking before. That's why I asked this. I'm selling a computer on Craigslist but was expecting local

I'm pretty sure the guy who's selling it is 16... not the buyer

Keep in mind the OP is 16 and doesn't have a bank account, the buyer is whatever age and seems like he does have a bank account.

It's a scam, don't even reply. I get these all the time when I sell stuff on CL. 'I have a check and you can clear you bank account' or some BS like that. I only accept cash on CL, nothing else. No shipping, nothing. Meet in person, cash in hand.

Edit: I'm 16 as well btw, I've sold tons of computer stuff on CL.

Edit 2: Haha I actually found the same number on my text history, asking the exact same thing. It's a scam bro, don't even reply anymore. Tell him to quit scamming people.

Edit 3: Directly from the CL scam prevention

  Examples of Scams

1. Someone claims your transaction is guaranteed, that a buyer/seller is officially certified, OR that a third party of any kind will handle or provide protection for a payment:

  • These claims are fraudulent, as transactions are between users only.
  • The scammer will often send an official looking (but fake) email that appears to come from craigslist or another third party, offering a guarantee, certifying a seller, or pretending to handle payments.

2. Distant person offers a genuine-looking (but fake) cashier's check:

  • You receive an email or text (examples below) offering to buy your item, pay for your services in advance, or rent your apartment, sight unseen and without meeting you in person.
  • A cashier's check is offered for your sale item as a deposit for an apartment or for your services.
  • Value of cashier's check often far exceeds your item—scammer offers to "trust" you, and asks you to wire the balance via money transfer service.
  • Banks will cash fake checks AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE WHEN THE CHECK FAILS TO CLEAR, sometimes including criminal prosecution.
  • Scams often pretend to involve a 3rd party (shipping agent, business associate, etc.).

3. Someone requests wire service payment via Western Union or MoneyGram:

  • Deal often seems too good to be true, price is too low, or rent is below market, etc.
  • Scam "bait" items include apartments, laptops, TVs, cell phones, tickets, other high value items.
  • Scammer may (falsely) claim a confirmation code from you is needed before he can withdraw your money.
  • Common countries currently include: Nigeria, Romania, UK, Netherlands—but could be anywhere.
  • Rental may be local, but owner is "travelling" or "relocating" and needs you to wire money abroad.
  • Scammer may pretend to be unable to speak by phone (scammers prefer to operate by text/email).

4. Distant person offers to send you a cashier's check or money order and then have you wire money:

  • This is ALWAYS a scam in our experience—the cashier's check is FAKE.
  • Sometimes accompanies an offer of merchandise, sometimes not.
  • Scammer often asks for your name, address, etc. for printing on the fake check.
  • Deal often seems too good to be true.

5. Distant seller suggests use of an online escrow service:

  • Most online escrow sites are FRAUDULENT and operated by scammers.
  • For more info, do a google search on "fake escrow" or "escrow fraud."

6. Distant seller asks for a partial payment upfront, after which they will ship goods:

  • He says he trusts you with the partial payment.
  • He may say he has already shipped the goods.
  • Deal often sounds too good to be true.

7. Foreign company offers you a job receiving payments from customers, then wiring funds:

  • Foreign company may claim it is unable to receive payments from its customers directly.
  • You are typically offered a percentage of payments received.
  • This kind of "position" may be posted as a job, or offered to you via email.

If you're mailing something sell it through Ebay. If not, stick to local pickups and payments only.

Are they gonna make a new season of Bravest Warriors. Or have they already. I stopped checking like 6 months ago.

Notice how they don't even reply properly to your messages. Obvious scam.

Even if it was a real person I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. I refuse to do business with stupid people, personally

Yeah, perhaps I'll just lower the price of the system. $400 isn't even realistic I just put it there because some people actually pay $400-500 for pre built systems at Best Buy with APUs with no dedicated graphics.

No idea. I've never even seen the show. I only use this as my profile picture because I liked the gif. I ripped it from @helping a while ago. He may know?

So I've gotten "certified checks" before, if someone says they're paying you with a check 9 out of 10 times it's a scam, they wait till the money is in your account, then they bounce the check refunding them the money and leaving you at the loss.

Real certified checks are fine and should be preferred over cash for big ticket items such as cars. They are checks which are signed by the bank and account holder to verify that the funds specified are available and the bank can be liable if the check bounces. Cashier's checks are even safer than certified checks as the bank is the one providing the money, not the account holder directly.

As others have said though, this does look like a scammer. Pretty common for Craigslist. I would only recommend doing local pickups on Craigslist. EBay is better set up for selling items out of state. More protection for both buyer and seller.
