Hey guys,

I was wondering what you guys think of this. With all of the surveillance stuff going on and with the current state the Internet is in what do you think of making an Internet 2.0?

All websites will have to migrate and it will not be backwards compatible since that defeats the purpose, maybe set a restriction on minimum Internet speeds for better content. Also it will be secure and encrypted everywhere.

Those are my thoughts, I'm wondering what you guys think. I think this will be an interesting discussion.

Internet speed will definitely be a thing. I imagine websites being more like applications with complex functions and animations making it seem a lot more fluid that the sites we currently have. They will have various integrated features which you would expect from an application or a program. In general a lot more appealing to an eye and advanced.

Setting a restriction on minimum internet speeds, no, that might not be the best idea... I'd never be allowed to connect

I could link you to many articles explaining why it's bad but in short it's about privacy. I'm sure you close your curtains and lock your doors. But you have nothing to hide right?

I don't care if I'm being spied, but I would really like faster Internet. It's ridiculous that I have to wait hours to download something.

It would mean that websites can be more complex and produce more data. I know some guys in the US have not the greatest Internet so obviously a compromise will have to be made. But honestly this is just a thought for now. Sooner or later I think the infrastructure over there will sort itself out. Gotta love my 120mbps Internet though here in the UK!

Well, the US is one thing. I'm in Australia... Yeah. Unless I pay for business connections I can't get a good speed in the specific area I live. The business connections can cost up to 700 a month.

But then all the government needs to do is order the end point (website owner) to provide a way for them to intercept traffic. Even things like tor have government owned exit nodes that log data.

One can dream though. I know this will never make it beyond this forum but hey it's just a whacky thought. I know nothing is 100% private but oh well

This post makes no sense, all the internet is is the connection from computer to computer, it's basically an extension of your lan cable to  a hub that connects everyone else while your browser allows you to share this info, it depends solely on the site owner and individual if they want stuff encrypted or not.

internet 2.0 isn't a thing.

We get the benefits of all the things I personally don't care about, great healthcare and such. Our prisoners are treated well. Also, we have a massive country with not many people in it, it's not really possible to not get ripped off on technology. Also, because of these things it's not just tech, it's things like food and furniture and everything that needs to be bought

Yep, people need to understand that the internet is just the connection between the networks. It doesn't have anything to do with anything else, just connecting the network of networks to other networks.

OP: You're basically saying "let's rebuild everything related to networks", you'd have to lay all new cable, make all new switching stations, you'd have to run all the underground cable again.  You'd also have invent new protocols that are built around encrypt and you'd have to introduce a verification system that tests everyones connection when they join.

While we're at it, we should rebuild all the governments, it would probably be easier.

Yes you're completely correct. As I said its not possible to do so its more of a concept and who knows it may be required. But look how far 10 years has brought the Internet. I know it's pretty impossible. It's just a though and discussion topic.

But the point I was trying to make earlier in the post is the fact that a network is just a network, the connection of devices. It doesn't do anything but connect things. It's the things on the network that cause all these issues. Even on your secure encrypted network I can still put DPI and things to record everything, then compare it to rainbow tables to "decode" everything.

It's a cool idea to thing about, but it won't really work the way you think.

Well like some other people have already pointed out, you can't really create an "Internet 2.0" because "The Internet" is simply a global network. It's like saying:

With all the car crashes and speed camera going on recently, why not build Road 2.0? All cars would have to migrate and it will not be compatible with current roads since that defeats the purpose.

Anyway, Tor is probably something like what you're thinking of OP. It's a network that runs over The Internet, fully encrypted and anonymous. It uses their own DNS servers and "onion routing". It's very misused and slow though, so it's not worth using unless anonymity is very important (like if you are a whistleblower).
