Questions switching from Windows 7 To Ubuntu.

Hello I have been a windows user since my first comp, a little IBM think pad my dad decided not to throw away running windows 95 i believe. Really the only reason I have not switched from windows sooner is gaming. Since steam is not an official client on Linux I'm assuming more games are sure to follow.

Now here is my question, I have a RAID 10 (4 1TB HDD's) on a software raid from my Asus sabertooth x79 mobo, but my operating system is on a 120GB SSD. Will I be able to install Ubuntu over writing my Windows 7 partition and OS without destroying what data on my raid? or would i be better to buy a external drive, copy it all the important information over. then just do a clean wipe of everything?

The reason I ask is I don't know what or how exactly software raids interact with OS's. and id hate to ruin what on my Raid 10 if i didn't have too.

Thanks for your help!
