So supposedly our wireless router http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/R4500/R4500_DS_07May12.pdf has DoS protection. I don't believe that it really has it but whatever. I will just claim that if someone threatens to DoS me in a game.

Good luck, Have fun, Build PC, and have a Wii and PS2 as your only consoles.

Oh and if someone is stupid enough to dos you rather then ddosing with a free botnet, you can report them or ddos them back with a free botnet. Though I've no idea if reporting someone would do anything.

I have a Uncle who does networking security and I have a felling I could get him to retaliate if someone did it to me. I think that reporting them would do nothing.

Good luck, Have fun, Build PC, and have a Wii and PS2 as your only consoles.

Realistically all firewalls do some DOS protection through simple rules and these rules are in place on nearly all consumer all-in-ones. The most common one being, essentially being; if I didn't ask for this, just drop it. Sure someone can still easily saturate your link between you and your ISP with bogus traffic, but the router and your internal network will survive just fine.

Furthermore your ISP is doing some DOS protection simply through WAN rate limiting and policing of your bandwidth.

Real DOS protection is extremely difficult and takes a very specific skill-set to implement and operate effectively, especially in larger networks.

Most likely the "DOS" protection offered by the router is just a marketing spin on the basic functions routers and firewalls are already doing. I wouldn't think much of it. Got to love marketing, they noticed the hype of people crying DDOS and created a nice marketing spin to capitalize on it.

Considering the main impact of DOS is that your download bandwidth would be completely saturated stopping it at the router isn't going to appreciably improve the situation anyway. A basic firewall and the usual NAT setup will stop a DOS in that way but really it needs to be stopped before it even gets onto the wire coming to you since home broadband is extremely bandwidth limited.

Also a real targeted DoS attack will take out the town or local area. Unless you annoyed some seriously bad people you won't ever see this, these are corporate attacks on hosted data centers with huge data pipes. The reason for these are either money or political, home users have neither.

As a home gamer you will never have to worry about this and anyone online, in game or on a forum, threatening to DoS attack you will not have the ability or know how to achieve such an attack. I'd question their ability to even service their own computer. If they could do it they would, not talk rubbish online.

I know I was just wondering if this was false advertisement or not. I so badly want to get on my towns fiber optic loop. It is about 3 blocks away, so close but so far.
