Could someone please explain the differences in performance between 6th gen i5s and i7s? That or please direct me to a thread about it. I'm in the market for gaming laptops.

There are a lot of different i5 and i7 mobile chips which are all different. Which chips are you talking about specifically?

the 15W -U processors are all 2 cores 4 threads. All of the i7 have higher core clock over all the i5.

 

the 28W -U processors also 2 cores 4 threads but better integrated grpahics over the 15W -U ones

 

the 45W -HQ processors have 4 cores all but i7 have 8 threads and i5 4 threads so the i7 is a lot more powerfull in this case (also more expensive)
