Alienware 17 Screen Jitter on Bootup?

GTechGeorge

So, this has been happening for several months now. It started all the way back at late September, went away for about a week, and now it seems to be doing this every time I start up my computer. It goes away after about 10-20 minutes of having the laptop running, but it's still very concerning. All my drivers are up to date, so I'm wondering if it's a connection problem of the cable from the screen to the motherboard itself. Plugging it into a monitor makes the screen readable, but only on that monitor. Occasionally it will get so bad that the entire screen is unusable. Any suggestions?

(P.S.: I'm building a PC in like 10 days so I'm probably going to avoid using this 10 pound laptop whenever possible. Should I fix it now or should I not even bother? My mom wants me to take it to get replaced, but then I'll be out of a computer for God knows how long.)

LCD or GPU issue to me

get it repaired if you have warranty

I told my dad that I wanted a Razer Blade Pro but he bought this, probably because he thinks Dell is a "reliable company" for gaming computers. He got a 1-year warranty for it which expired this past July. That's why I took it apart to see if a cable was coming loose. I couldn't get the top to separate from the motherboard casing so I had to put it back together. I tried desperately to get it fixed, but I couldn't find my graphics card drivers. I literally used it as a doorstop for the rest of the night cause that was all it was good for. Like I said, I'm gonna go to Micro Center with some friends on the 28th and we're all gonna build desktops, and I'm avoiding this laptop as much as possible. I'll probably move the files to my desktop and do a factory reset to see if I can make some money off of it. Then again, it has an i7 and a R9 290. Because Intel and AMD TOTALLY aren't competing companies.

But anyway, here's the link to my new build.

I know 32GB RAM is a bit overkill, and an i5 is a bit underkill, but I wanted something that can deliver good gaming and do a heck of a lot of work in After Effects, cause I need it for my YouTube channel. My next step is to either replace the i5 with an i7, or get a 970 or greater.

wait till you build your pc, get your system repaired/replaced whatever the case is and keep it for a last resort back up or on the go type stuff. although i hate alienware you already have it so to just let it sit there would be a waste if you can make use of it on the go

to give you the "alienware" feel

makes you feel like theres electronic waves flowing through your PC

all jokes aside your display is 99.9% dieing

Get a new laptop.... AVOID ALIENWARE. sorry but alienware has been crap for the last 8 years roughly

These guys are all right.. Alien ware sucks just FYI.. if its free/cheap get it replaced. If you have to pay for it just junk the thing or sell it on ebay for parts. Most likely the screen or GPU which both are expensive to replace.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey there! It's me again. So my cousin installed MSI afterburner and found out that I can't change the core voltage on my GPU and that the PSU in the laptop is probably broken, cause I can't change the power limit. Not even 5 minutes ago I was playing GTA V, and my GPU heated up to like 200 degrees Farenheight. Woo hoo! Anyway, my laptop literally just shut down completely while I was playing a mission. NZXT. CAM isn't showing me any information on my graphics card, and MSI afterburner has switched to Intel HD Graphics 4600. Did I literally just burn out my graphics card? If so, I'm giving myself a pat on the back. Good job me! Thank god I'm building a computer in 2 days...
