Hey LTT community,

This Christmas i will be experiencing my first pc build. In Australia the prices for tech are outrageous. Therefore a $400 build in the US is a $700 build over here. e.g. a gtx 970 can cost up to $450

With that in mind i have a strict budget and this is what i have come up with

CPU: I3 6100 3.7ghz

GPU: Gigabyte r9 280x ( Already bought )

SSD: OCZ Trion 100 120gb

HDD: WD Blue 1TB

MOBO: Asrock h110m-HDV LGA1151

PSU: Silverstone Strider plus 600w 80+ bronze

RAM: GeIL Super Luce 2x4gb ddr4
CASE: Silverstone ps11

This is literally all i could afford as the cheapest 6th gen i5 over here is $295. The I3 is $170. Keep in mind i grabbed the r9 280x for $190 instead of ~300.

What do you think of this build, and my main concern being will the i3 bottleneck the r9 280x????

Thanks in advance,

Squigg

It's a pretty well balanced build and I can't see the CPU bottlenecking the 280x in really anything.

My Build:

Spoiler

CPU: i7 4770k GPU: GTX 780 Direct CUII Motherboard: Asus Maximus VI Hero SSD: 840 EVO 250GB HDD: 2xSeagate 2 TB PSU: EVGA Supernova G2 650W

go for the Haswell

the i5 haswell CPU is cheaper

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

why even buy the 6th gen i3

there shouldn't be bottleneck though

well BLCK OCing is back (BIOS updates from mobo manufacturers), I've seen 4.62GHz on the 6100. admittedly a don't see that on an H110.

Oh and one other thing, Australia cycles tech absurdly quickly. Haswell motherboards are in a pretty serious decline.

@Squigg actually, is there a budget for this (excluding GPU), i might be able to do better (It's generally very good, but I may be able to provide alternatives)

@JebKerman Maximum $700

well i came up with this which goes over by just $11, https://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=wish_lists&wlcId=529616&action=wish_lists

if that's a very very firm $700 swap the SSD for this then it's only $1 over: https://www.pccasegear.com/products/32553

@dragoon20005 Weirdly enough, the haswell i5's are more expensive then the Skylake i5's over here.

damn

what if you order from other retailers outside of Aus?

exchange rate actually pans out pretty much equal (just the dollar's so bad), so the shipping means it's more expensive generally
