What can windows 2012 do that other OS cant?

Cvdasfg

I see a lot of businesses using windows server 2012 for NAS type things. Just out of curiosity whats the benefit of going with this os instead of something like unraid or freenas?

Support and timely bug/security fixes. I cant say I have seen a business use 2012 for a NAS alone it normally does other jobs... But I mostly work with larger projects that have dedicated storage solutions (FSAN/SAN's).

Other then that are there any features that stand out over freenas/unraid?

Well like I said a small business wont be using a 2012 install just for NAS they will be using it for other things (maybe some AD roles, Printer server etc). That coupled with somebody at the end of the phone and guaranteed support/fixes till X date makes it worth having.

You wont find a FreeNAS box or Unraid solution in larger enterprises either as there are much better solutions out there (Unraid just being a skinned KVM hypervisor)

Exchange servers, Hyper V, Print servers, Windows Application server, - better integration with windows clients etc

In fact my home server is using WHS 2012 Essentials - but I got it for free and it was easier to use than learning Freenas/Unraid

When my mate was doing computer science at Uni they gave him a few licences :D so he gave me tons of software with his spares :D

I really like it, since its my first self built NAS and I am shit at software, its SO much easier to use than dicking around with Freenas/Unraid - its just like using windows haha - and for those too scared to do RAID it has storage pools which is neat (although I am doing raid 10)

You can give FreeNAS a go yeah if thats ALL you want it to do. Personally It would be much more beneficial to find a cheap 2012 key (LINK) and use SMB shares, then at least you have access to everything else WS has to offer.

Yeah I've had a FREENAS server for years and not going to lie. I dont like it. :( The thing is way to complicated for my liking.

It's rare to see it on something like a nas, usually it's on servers and sometimes workstations. The positives include less preinstalled nonsense corporations don't need, constant and lasting support, somewhat higher stability and security features.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

I do actually have one question. I see on Microsofts site that they have a 180 evaluation key of WS2012r2 essentials. are all features unlocked in this? Any restrictions?
