How Bad Is This Idea?

Go to solution Solved by Kinda Bottlenecked,

Well. Since you'll be upgrading the CPU anyway, 980 + 8320.

I was looking to get a i5 4460 and a GTX 970 as a Christmas upgrade, but then I got an idea....

What if I don't get a new CPU and just get a new GPU?

Bring on the idea of getting a GTX 980 with my FX 8320

I'm just wondering how nerfed my shiny new 980 would be with my peasant 8320

I'll probably upgrade to a 4690k and Krait Z97 in a few months, but it's 8320 until then

I'm a fucking AMD kawaii weeaboo desu I have seen the light

It would be a better experience than the 970.

The 980 and 970 are so close in performance, it'd be really stupid IMO. The big advantage of the 980 is lack of microstutter when the last 0.5 GB of memory begins to be used.

If it were me, I'd get the following package if you can afford it:

R9 Fury is better than the gtx 980 in most games, and they are the same price, but yeah the 8320 is not great of a CPU

The FX is going to gimp the 980. It's a bad idea for two reasons, FX and the 980. 980 Price to performance is really bad. Get a 970 or a 980ti or a Fury R9.

Yeah, I'd wait to upgrade the CPU later.

The 8320 might bottleneck it a bit in some games, but it shouldn't be too much of a problem if you're going to upgrade CPU+mobo in next few months.

Keep in mind that if you went with the i5 now, that also entails buying a new motherboard.
