Elite Dangerous.  The latest season of updates, Horizons, just added planetary landing.  (with other goodies as well)  They are adding multi-crew, pilot customization, and more things later on this year.  Can't really say much for Star Citizen, it is too unstable and lackluster.  It is more of a glorified tech demo as of right now, it is best to wait that one out.

I think it is a marketing issue. Frontier calls Horizons an expansion (and it is), but the customers see "expansion" as DLC. And DLC are often less than 20$ for most games. Mind you, Horizons has been in the works since last December, so we have to pay for one year work of programming/testing. It is not a cheap EA DLC that gives you one extra map. Frontier is planning to release a new Season/expansion each year for the next 10 years. So be ready to spend the full price if you want the latest each year. Unless you buy the Seasons Pass for like 180$USD but grants you access to everything in the future, including Betas.

You actually get a rebate for Horizons if you own the Season 1/base game. Actually, if you bought ED at 15$USD on Black Friday and want to buy Horizons now while being a Season 1 owner, you get 15$USD off Horizons. So they somehow refund you your base game that you've been playing for few weeks and you get Horizons.

The way I see it : instead of charging for a monthly fee (because the ED infrastructure is costly, running on AWS), they charge you yearly. But, if you don't want Horizons, you can keep playing with Season 1 on live servers and they will still be new features coming for Season 1 owners, including loot and crafting. Unlike games with monthly fees, when you stop paying, you can't play anymore, you will be able to play Season 1 until they kill the servers in the next decade.
