the 360 is powerpc isnt it?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_technical_specifications

based on this, its an IBM triple-core powerPC.

also, what would pulling it out the xbox case, and putting it into a pc case change?

no because the hardware for the Xbox probobly soldered to the mobo. pretty hard to take it out in the first place

He's only asking if he could take a board from a 360 and put it into a PC case and then put Windows on a hard drive connected to it. They didn't mention anything about changing out hardware.

I know some people got linux running on xbox 360. So I assume then emulating windows on that linux would be possible.

Of course, if it's possible, it'll be so slow it won't even handle minesweeper. But, I guess it can work.

You can turn a 360 into a PC, they still do that here. Completely outdated. A cheap laptop will kill it for power.

the issue with windows on an xbox 360 is that as far as i know windows doesnt release for powerPC architecture.

linux, however, should work. if you pick a flavor that releases for powerPC that is.

in theory you could run OS X (original) on it since its Power-PC based

Yes, as I said, and then run a windows emulation of the linux on the xbox.

I was wondering if i could put the motherboard of an xbox 360, put it in my PC and install windows 8.1 in it. I would like to know if that would work.

Windows 8.1, nope, but linux: http://www.free60.org/wiki/Main_Page

I think I found a use for my damn 360.

eh, with osx you run into driver issues even when specificly picking parts that work well with it.

well, thank you for the lovely illustration. the issue with emulation is that you'd have to emulate the instructionset, instead of just virtualization.

which honestly.. if you'd end up getting windows xp working to a point you can use notepad, you're a god of emulation... and the question was specificly windows 8.1.

May I ask what you are looking to get out of this project?

Proof of concept or just to do it just because.

I am curious.
