I have a Samsung galaxy s5 phone, I was planing to save everything and boot with a custom kernal, and then oc it as needed, but not full time oc it, the app seems pretty simple to use. And aside from the kernal being unique, the app seems pretty universal. You'd just need to walk through the kernal installation for the video which seems to be just factory reset it with the kernal.

Huh... I'm running the latest SkyDragon with Sense 7 on 5.0.2 & using the ElementalX 20.2... Cant go past 1,7Ghz because my HTC won't go past the boot screen [emoji52]

maybe your phone is just a bad overclocker?

Unsafe temperatures is not a problem, as ALL arm processors have a hardware thermal shutdown mechanism built-in, with the software shutdown threshold much lower. Many phones such as the Galaxy S5 will also warn you when the phone gets too hot, and start closing applications. A few years ago my S4 Mini shut itself down from overheating in my pocket.

What I had in mind is the BBC's technology show called Click, where they filmed and edited a full 50 minute episode of the show using just mobile devices. That such scenario would have no-doubt benefited from overclocking the CPU.

And also don't forget that all CPUs are different, overclocking a MediaTek CPU will not bring a big performance difference compared to overclocking a Qualcomm CPU. Anyone who even bothers trying to overclock a Actions Semiconductor CPU is wasting their time, they're useless.

I'm sure a power user who wanted a full desktop computing experience would take a laptop with them or just use a remote desktop link - there isn't much point trying to carry a full desktop OS on a device with small storage (<64GB) unless you're planning on editing word documents or doing on-the-go presentations (Which is exactly what I used my Android 2.2 tablet for after installing Windows CE).

The long story short is, it really depends on what the person wants to do on their phone, but everyone's mileage will vary.

Before I go I should also mention RAM. Having a fast CPU clocked at a high stock speed isn't always the answer. If you have a 4GHz dual-core phone and only 1GB of ram, the processor essentially is making no difference to the system's performance, as the RAM would limit what you can do on it simultaneously anyway. The first 1 or 2 applications would open quick, then it would start to slow down. Thankfully Android's minfree file can be edited to change RAM allocation preferences, but I'd rather have a phone with heaps of RAM and a slow CPU that can be overclocked to reach my desired performance requirement, rather than many modern phones with a mere 2GB of RAM (may sound like a lot of ram, but when you have 10-15+ background apps open, it gets heavily used up) and fast CPUs that aren't even able to show their full potential under multitasking workloads.

Pre-emptive shutdown will not always solve all issues. Some parts, particularly the sound adapter, are often loosely soldered and high temperatures over a long time can sever the link causing malfunctions. That said, even if it were completely safe, having it throttle or shutdown completely defeats the purpose of overclocking it in the first place. Not to mention the gain in instability.

Editing anything but the simplest videos on a phone doesn't make any sense at all, no matter what sort of user you are, and the same goes for an arm or atom based tablet. Devices like the surface pro exist exactly for that sort of thing on the go, and overclocking a phone will get you nowhere near that level of usability. The only reason I can see for doing that is "because we can" (which I can sort of get behind), and at that point performance is much less relevant than the thing even working.

For tinkerers who'd like to overclock their phone just to see what happens, there are things like the raspberry pi that offer all that for a very low price and no heat or throttling concerns (to a certain extent).

I agree that more ram and faster storage are better additions to a phone than 10% more performance due to a higher clock speed, that was one of the things I meant with "it doesn't make sense".

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Got my HTC One X up to 1.6GHz from 1.5GHz.

Some later variants of it could achieve a 1.7GHz OC. While the really early phones could only do 1.55GHz.

That phone ran hot by default so the OC was zero temp change for the most part.

Oooooh the HOX... my first smartphone, what a fail thing that turned out to be :P But it was nice too.

Heeeey I'm back after about an hour of testing... A waterfall of luck struck me & allowed to overclock my CPU from 1,7Ghz to a stable 2,13Ghz with a slightly lowered voltage (just a tiny bit) [emoji1] but anything past 2,13Ghz causes a lot of FC when the phone boots... But I'm damn happy with 2,13GHz [emoji1]

P.S. Also OC'd my graphics card to 585Mhz. Works great [emoji1]

It is a nice device but of course the problems came later down the line. I still use it today. Only smartphone iI actuallyreally like despite it running at 1 Million degrees all the time.

I've overclocked my old Xperia arc before, from 1.0GHz (base) to 1.6GHz, on it's dual core processor. It didn't really get hot lel.
