I am aware that skullcandy is on tthe same level as beats and other overpriced products, but through my work I get a 40% off pro deal......

I think people are being a bit hasty in writing them off. The Mixmasters and the Aviators have gotten pretty good reviews so if you can afford them with the 40% deal then go for it.

No. SkullCandy are quite awful.

In the first year of my SkullCandy Lowrider's purchase I had to get 5 replacements owing to the abysmal build quality and materials. The sound quality was completely inconsistent between the replacements but generally pretty awful.

I would strongly recommend looking into a cheap pair of Sennheiser headphones. Their budget stuff tends to be pretty decent in my experience.

what brands does this discount apply to?  +one for what whiskers said, although I would add try the sony's too. They'll never sound as good as $100+ headphones but at least they won't suck as bad as skullcandy and you won't regret getting them.

Indeed. Sony tend to be decent.

I recently got a pair of Philips Citiscape Shibuya headphones for £19 which are remarkably good. Extremely comfortable even after prolonged use, impressive sound isolation and decent sound.

Skullcandy's been nothing but cheap rebranded oem stuff with shiny plastic bits strategically placed to lure teenagers in like fish. Some of their stuff my actually be good at certain price points, but I ain't digging thorough all those products...

in the past japanese products and cars were thought as rubbish and they've turned things around.

growing up kia and hyundai produced rubbish cars but now have turned things right around.

LG and Samsung were second rate cheap throw away products in the past and now are among the top tier.

in general I shy away from making blanket statements about companies and allow them for improvement over time.

however, I don't shy away from declaring beats to be plain rubbish.

Yeah, but I'll let the mainstream determine if they turn themselves around before I go and recommend a product from them.

Funny thing about Samsung is that they have been making tv's and screens amongst other stuff since the 60's, but they did it as an oem, so when they started selling under their own name that no one had heard of they thought they were shit, They didn't know that they were already watching Samsung TV's.  Similar story with LG, a fair bit of Hyundai's early monitors where made around LG crt's.

EDIT: as opposed to skull candy, who have just taken someone else's crap product and rebranded it.

On the whole i agree, i had never considered any of their headphones other than those two. But they have improved over time and those two in particular have both been singled out on Head-Fi and Innerfidelity as being decent. Also Jude from Head-Fi has gone on record saying that, due to a new sound engineer at Skullcandy, the quality of their stuff has greatly improved.

Skoda are one of the classic examples of this. The cars have now drastically improved and are among the most reliable and best quality, yet they still hold on to the terrible reputation in the mainstream. I think this may be the case with Skullcandy as they have this new sound engineer and appear to be taking a turn for the better.

My point to the OP was that if The Mixmasters or Aviators are available at 40% off them the competition at the reduced price may not be as good so i think go for it. I was looking at the Mixmasters for a little while since the Innerfidelity review.

perhaps samsung/LG was the wrong example.

Logitechs acquisition of ultimate ears has produced good results for the company especially with the ultimate ears branded stuff.

as stated above they've turned things around a bit with the mix master mikes and aviators. while their acquisition of Astro is not in the same league as logitech's ultimate ears move but it is in the right direction.

now for the ultimate test: will I put my money where my mouth is? oh heck no. not unless I stumble across a crazy deal will I get them. there are just way too many products out there that require my attention first.

a year ago I would agree that the blanket statement regarding skullcandies was warranted but not anymore.

thanks for your replies. I unfortunatly do not get pro deals on other headphone brands, or this discussion would not have happened anyway. The deals I get are mostly camping and outdoor equipment. I am not even sure why SC is there in the first place.

If there are any suggesstions for headphone under $100 I am open for replies. If I should just save my money be honest though.

I wouldn't say they were the wrong example, the sentiment from a consumers point of view is bang on the money. The Skullcandy's have the potential to improve (like all products) but it will take a lot of education and first hand experience before those of us who have only heard their cheap stuff agree they have.  And if their manufacturing process is open to variances (Like many cheap products) then it is possible that every now and then a batch will come out sounding exceptional for the $20 price tag.

I think Shearme  summed it up well when he said he'd let the mainstream determine if they have improved before he recommends them.  I'll wait until one of you guys recommend them before I get a pair, I also have other headphones in my sight. Alas I just spent all my savings on a new car :(.

I personally would not buy them even if they are dirt cheap honestly. I tried some SkullCandys at a local audiophile store and the bass was really muddy and also leaked into the mids which was very annoying. Try something like the HD 439 for a slight bass boost, HD 449 for budget neutral sound or ATH-M50s for the best price to performance

Even if someone of Skullcandy's new expensive headphones sound pretty good, they don't have any cheap stuff out right now which is at least 90% of what they sell. Sure, two good sounding headphones might turn things around in the long run, but for the time being, Skullcandy headphones still turn your skull into candy.
