So I was watching a video about how Xeon processors are better "Bang for the Buck" than a i7. I have these 2 CPUs that are as close as I could find to have a Apples to Apples comparison in specs.

(Click them for links)

i7 6700

Xeon E3-1240 v5

They are very similar but what are the upsides and downsides between both in Gaming (with a GPU not on-board graphics) and productivity?

This is kind of a stupid question because lots of people say "i7 is better! dont go for Xeons they are for servers!" but I really want to know what lurks under those CPU housings :)

The Xeon is designed for servers, so it has ECC Ram support and no iGPU.

The i7 is designed for consumers, so it doesn't have ECC support and has iGPU

They will preform the same. (assuming they have the same specs)

the skylake xeons do not work on consumer motherboards

the 1231v3 used to be a good alternative to the 4790k on 1150

but you cant use xeons on consumer 1151 anymore, so thats out of the question...

not much of a difference

the xeon and the i7 have the same underlying skylake architecture but the xeons have server features like the ecc memory and qpi for running with multiple cpus.

they are the same clock for clock

Hmmm, ECC is good though? They make less mistakes so isnt that a 1up? And what on earth is iGPU???

Didnt know that wow... RIP

yeah it disappointed a  ton of people :C

but i guess it makes sense though, on intels side, since consumers were buying a more expensive CPU for cheap...
