Gtx 970/780ti and open air cooler in low airflow case.

I have a reference 780 ti in my rig right now and a family member bought an msi 970 w/ cooler. 

However, he will not be using it for a few weeks, so I have the opportunity to play around with it.

my question is this:

 

1) the 970 and 780 ti seem close in performance, however, I'm reading the 970 can overclock further and runs cooler. My 780 ti also doesn't OC very well. Would I notice any difference in fps with a 970?

 

2) I'm using a define r5 case with the included 2 fans as intake and an h80 cooler as exhaust, considering how restricted they are, it doesn't seem like they move a lot of air. Would there be any ventilation problems in the case with an open air gpu cooler?

Really depends on the game. Im most cases they will be pretty similar, but in games like witcher 3 the maxwell cards pull ahead. One the other side of the card, the 780ti recks in games like crysis 3 which look at "raw performance."

 

My card with a balls to the wall OC gets a little over 14,000 for graphics on firestrike, and a moderately overclocked 970 gets around 13,700 so the gap is not very large.

No.. It's not... Early In the 970's lifespan It performed better but not anymore, Its not so much that Its worth the upgrade however...

It has held up well, but it's just that I still use the "max everything" mentality that I had with my 1080p monitor, and the 780ti can't really do that on 1440p.

Its just that the 780 ti is just sort of brute force with nearly 3000 cuda cores, but the new Kepler architecture can do a lot more with less cores. The 980ti has nearly the same amount of cuda cores, but is pretty much twice as fast in synthetics.
