If you upgrade, you'll have the chance of reverting to Windows 8.1 for 30 days if you decide you want to do that. If you know that you want Windows 10 permanently, then it's definitely a good idea to do a clean installation. There are bugs in Windows 10, and there can be additional problems when doing just an upgrade, and not a clean installation.

Some people haven't encountered issues yet, while others have had significant issues. Even if you don't immediately encounter any, it's just sound conduct to put the foundation of a clean installation there, to ensure that the OS stays operating in the smoothest manner that it can.

Maybe do the upgrade, and if you like Windows 10 after using it for a couple of weeks, then perform a clean installation. That way you don't really lose any effort, because you don't have to do anything for the upgrade, other than just wait for it to complete. And a clean installation will use up the same attention in two weeks that it would require from you if you did it now.

thats not a clean install..its just a simpler upgrade

and it doesn't really solve all the problems with a upgrade only

Um, I can't know for sure what you'd think of Windows 10, but I really like Windows 7, and tried Windows 10 for a while, and have gone back to Windows 7, which I've discovered I like far more than Windows 10. I've also discovered that the comfort from using an OS that does things the way I like has a significant impact on my enjoyment and work motivation. Windows 10 feels cold and sterile to me, and I appreciate Windows 7 a lot more than as 'just an OS' after experiencing how worse (in my opinion) things could be, and coming back to it.

So, if you don't see for yourself exactly what about Windows 10 is great, then maybe just keep using what you already have and get satisfaction from. Windows 10 is mostly a re-presentation of Windows 7 and 8, with many monetization capabilities for Microsoft built into it. If a person already has 7, or 8(.1) they really already have the OS that Windows 10 re-presents.

Windows 7 and 8(.1) will receive Vulkan, which accomplishes the same low-level communication between hardware and drivers, to deliver improved application and gaming performance, so you might be covered with that.

It's up to you, but here's a post I just wrote in another thread.

Windows 10 is mostly like Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, but with a different visual style, a start menu that is a bit less convenient IMO, search functionality that is bloated, and built-in spy functionality that collects usage data which Microsoft turns into revenue through a variety of methods.

Windows 10 has some minor to moderate enhancements, like the ability to pause file-copying, and DirectX 12, but it also has some moderate to, I think, major downgrades. Some of those include worsened search behaviour, worsened start menu, invasive data collection, and reduced visual customization options.

The sort-of return of the desktop / start menu, and DirectX 12 are probably Windows 10's biggest selling points. But the desktop / start menu exist in Windows 7 and 8.1, and the start menu is more efficient, more functional, and, in my opinion, nicer organized in Windows 7 than 10.

DirectX 12 is a good thing for gaming, though Windows 7 and 8(.1) will receive the non-proprietary Vulkan, which accomplishes the same thing that DirectX 12 does.

There are bugs in Windows 10, but some people say they don't experience any, while others say they do.

In the end, Windows 10 is still within the same vein of OS as Vista, 7, 8, and 8.1. There isn't a leap of new tech involved like there was from Windows XP to Vista, and the practical differences between these OSes is primarily hardware support, and then whatever surface-level changes you can see in the user interface, and whatever other apps are installed on a particular version of Windows. Windows Vista doesn't have great hardware support anymore, and never really received full on hardware support, but from Windows 7 onwards, there is full hardware support, except when it comes to DirectX 12, which has been made exclusive for Windows 10.

Windows 7 and 8.1, in all practicality apart from DirectX 12 (though they'll receive Vulkan), remain just as modern and supported as Windows 10. So take a look at the Windows 10 interface and see if you find it attractive. If you don't, you're probably best staying with the Windows you currently have.

Vulkan will certainly be on Windows, and game devs will use it. There may be games that use only Vulkan or DirectX 12, and not the other, and there also may be games that use both of them.

Valve: With The Rise Of Vulkan, Why Bother With DirectX 12?

Valve does not speak for all developers concerning this question, but they are a major developer, and they have a clear opinion on the matter. Obviously, you can expect Valve games to use Vulkan on Windows 7 and 8(.1).

Vulkan will be to DirectX 12 as OpenGL was to DirectX. It performs the same tasks, but is non-proprietary and open-sourced, while DirectX 12 is owned by Microsoft.

That doesn't sound like a substantiated opinion. This much is known: Vulkan is going to be on Windows, and will be certainly be used on Windows by developers - and will probably be favoured by developers who make their games to have Linux support.

DirectX 12 is Windows 10 only. Vulkan is Linux, Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8(.1), and 10. In the past, between DirectX and OpenGL, Windows games developers trended favouring DirectX over OpenGL as time went on, but earlier DirectX didn't segment improved performance to a particular OS, leaving the majority of the Windows gamer install-base behind.

It's worth noting that Valve with Source 2, Epic with Unreal 4, DICE with Frostbite, and Unity have all pledged to support Vulkan. That means that almost every future Windows game will have access to Vulkan support, just by being developed on one of those game engines.

Cross-platform developers will particularly have incentive to make use of Vulkan.

And I think Star Citizen is reported to be getting both DirectX 12 and Vulkan support, and that Crytek is implementing Vulkan into their engine. Godot game engine will also support Vulkan.

So pretty much everybody is supporting Vulkan.
