Is the 2600k still worth getting today?

Backstory: Shit happened to my rig when I was moving... basically FUBAR'd. The only thing that physically survived is the PSU... but I'm not gonna gamble on using it since I hear rattling inside it... so I guess it doesn't count as a functional survivor. I'm currently using an internet cafe for internet access and a bit of entertainment.

 

Rig that I had before it got demolished (no photos because I didn't wanna see it again after the accident):

i7-4770k

(Ghetto mounted) Corsair H100i

Asus Maximus Impact Z87

G.Skill Ares 2x8 16gb RAM @ 1600mhz

Crucial MX100 512gb SSD

MSi GTX 780 Ti

Corsair RM850

Dimastech Test Table Nano

I forgot to mention I paid taxes and shipping too for the rig. So, yeah...
 

After that fiasco, I was out canvassing for parts. Then I came across an allegedly still-sealed 2600k (by allegedly, I mean I went in and asked how much and they showed me the box and still has the seal... could be meticulously resealed for all I know) for $100 and a package option of them throwing in an Asus Z77 Sabertooth for $70 more (though they have other Z77 motherboards for sale, but not packaged with the allegedly still-sealed 2600K). But, here's the thing, lets pretend this is second hand and has been in service and has yet failed or something, is it still worth getting the 2600K?

Incase someone asks and want to suggest just in case, my budget's under $800.

I'd say so, its a pretty good bargain even if it is 2nd hand. Here in the UK they're going for about $160~

Well, just out concern as a consumer, is there anything else I'd worry about in terms of motherboards other than support? I forgot to mention that the motherboards he has for sale thats compatible are second-hand, so I don't know what kind of abuse each one had.

Well... I'm gonna copy-paste my rant from another thread cuz I'm kinda too lazy to retype it.

Sometimes I wish ISPs in my country aren't so shit. Pay a near $100 premium (cuz, duh, they said, you need a phone with your router so you're gonna pay for the phone along with the internet service, whether you use the phone at all or not, whether the phone's plugged in or not) for 10mbps down and barely 1mbps up... AND ITS BARELY STABLE OR EVEN REACH A THIRD OF ITS ADVERTISED SPEED ON BEST DAYS! And oh, here's the funny part, if you happen to live in an area that doesn't have Fibr/Fiber/Fibre/whatever that is connection, they ain't givin' it to you cuz "your area doesn't support it" and shit. The worse part is that the competition is worse. Plus the hassle of moving, and expense... I could've used that money on things I actually want and need like games and food, not having to replace an entire motherfucking rig because the movers took a shit route thats going uphill and the lock of the door wasn't good enough that it broke my entire rig, which was protected to the nth degree that I could afford with a pelican case (no padlocks, though, cuz that pelican case's padlock loop was too small to fit padlocks I could buy nearby), with foam pads ontop of the foam pads IN the case. The company refuses to pay for it because they can't believe that a PC can cost as much as a second-hand car. So, fuck them. USD$3000 for a PC... just DESTROYED!

Absolutely, the 2600K is still a great CPU, especially for that price.

Could you not test them to see if they work? Its not that old of a platform so you can still buy parts brand new that are compatible.

Always check the CPU pins on the board.

LGA sockets are fragile little bastards, so ensure the guy has a socket cover and all the pins are aligned properly.

 

Outside of that, there isn't really that much wrong with second hand boards. If the CPU socket and RAM slots work, then you're pretty much good to go.

Well I'd go for a trusted brand, also if im not mistaken its the z77 motherboards that are the enthusiast motherboards and the H motherboards are the more affordable, less thrills and features motherboards.

Its understandable, thats the thing with 2nd hand parts, you dont know what they've been through and how long they might last, but a well trusted brand like Asus or something will use quality components that will last longer, if it works when you test it and it doesnt look in bad shape then go for it

Nah man, the 2600K is great and all, but even if your computer was physically badly damaged your chances are pretty good the CPU itself actually survived, even if the motherboard is buggered to hell. It should be well protected in that socket, you know. Especially if you didn't turn it on afterwards.

Nah man, the 2600K is great and all, but even if your computer was physically badly damaged your chances are pretty good the CPU itself actually survived, even if the motherboard is buggered to hell. It should be well protected in that socket, you know. Especially if you didn't turn it on afterwards. 

The impact it took (since it also hit a car's wheel and a fairly big rock) was strangely enough to:

1.) Knock the AIO pump/etc.../I forgot the term off (I'll admit on this one that I didn't really screw it in at acceptable torsion because I was changing its thermal paste, but when I heard the movers came in, I just screwed it back on for the sake of just screwing it back on and reapplying the thermal paste there), which exposed the chip's die... which got dented after getting hit on the rock. Talk about consequences...

2.) I used my chip to test Z87 and Z97 boards at the local stores. The chip was confirmed dead after five board tests... thus why I canvassed and came across the 2600K for $100.

 

If it is same price or cheaper than FX-8350 then it is a steal!
