What shouldnt you put on your nas?

Cvdasfg

I'm going to be doing a liquid cooled computer soon and would like it to not have any actual Hardrives in it ( just SSD's). What stuff can you store on a nas and not lose performance? Should the only thing I have on my actual computer be the programs and games?

We keep all of our music and our pictures, ect, on the NAS, and also backed up on the cloud.

I used to be quite active here.

Pretty much anything can be stored on a NAS. All depends on your internal network speed. If you had a 10Gb connection I wouldn't worry about putting much more than the OS on an SSD in your rig. :P

But yeah. Just throw your random shit on it and keep programs and games on your rig.

anything that is impacted by latency. network speeds these days (gigabit) are good enough to cap out two 5400rpm drives, which to some people are sufficient as a boot drive...

some programs dont seem to like interfacing with network storage, but i havent done much testing on that.

Mkay. What about adobe raw video/saves would these stay on the SSD's while working on them? Or would they be fine on a NAS aswell?

If you have the space, I'd run your programs and games on your system, and have documents and backups on your NAS.

That is the least problematic setup. Anything else, and you end up with "oh no, my consumer-grade NAS is updating, I cannot play a game or open xyz program for the next 10 minutes".

if you're doing watercooling, but have a crappy consumer grade nas, you're doing it wrong...

Again, depends on your connection to the NAS. I had a roughly 750Mbps connection to one and it wasn't too bad, but it still wasn't as nice as having a dedicated drive just for a scratch disk.

I just suggest trying it on the NAS first, and if it sucks, switch to local.

i'm gonna do a 10TB setup soon-ish, probably gonna go all the way from scratch, and dont even bother with any raid or similar setups.

probably either gonna be two storage drives and a backup drive, or the storage drives mirrored, and a backup drive.

Also, I agree with the "NAS's are awesome" bit.

At my grandma's, I made one for her, my mom, my stepdad, my sister, and myself. Has a Q6600, 4 gigs of RAM, 80GB slow AF Barracuda, and a 160GB Deskstar for storage. The kicker? Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard. Man I love MSDN.

I signed up for this thing for businesses where you can basically get free product keys for an asston of stuff (BizSpark). REALLY handy, and all of my stuff is actually legit now.
