When is an additional 8-pin needed?

Go to solution Solved by Enderman,

yes the CPU needs power from the EPS connector (4 or 8 pin)

So a friend of mine is posting his new PC consisting of a skylake i5 6500, and an msi b150 gaming m3 motherboard, a single stick (don't ask why, it just is) 8GB hyperx fury ddr4 memory. We cannot find a powersupply at our workplace that had a 24 pin + a 8 pin connector. just a 24-pin. I'm wondering if we will even need an extra 8-pin in order to post the PC. My friend argues otherwise. the CPU is clocked @ 3.2 GHz. is the extra 8-pin needed or can we post with just a 24 pin?

You can't power on the PC without having that cable you guys have new hardware yet you wanna power it with such an old psu? (Assuming its old)

The PSU he is using for the PC is a 600 watt psu (forget the actual name) so we wasn't gonna use an old PSU to run it, it just hadn't come in with the rest of the parts and we wanted to try an post it with one we had on hand in the office. The problem is fixed so no worries. I was just being stupid.

I'd be weary of a fire hazard putting too much load on the wires unless its a really low watt cpu and you are leaving it stock. I have a 10 or so year old 550w Antec power supply that is the same way, only a 20 pin 4 pin and I opted to just buy a new psu when I ordered the parts to build my dad a new rig. Its just not worth it, you can pick up a 600w evga for $29.

$8 for an adapter and potential fire hazard or $29, peace of mind alone is worth the extra $20.

Check EVGA website I think they have PSU rebates going on right now. This was $29 a few days ago, because I was considering buying one.
