helping friend install new harddrive.

so my friends old harddrive is failing and were going to replace it with a 320 gb wd blue my only issue is how am i gonna move all his stuff from one drive to the next without having to do a clean install of windows or any of that sort of mess?

Clone the drive. WD offers their edition of Acronis to do that. New drive must be as big or bigger than original for best result. WD has really good guide on how-to their site. Captain_WD can help you more.

his old drive is a seagate 2 tb the new drive is a 320 gb wd blue and yes he has less than 320 gbs of stuff on the 2 tb

Another option is called migrate. There you select folders to copy.

is it a software? will i need to partition the new drive first id imagine?

Its another way of doing cloning. Acronis etc. can do that. You will need to partition/format new disk but you can do it while migrating process is done. Here's manual for WD edition of Acronis to read more http://www.wdc.com/WDProducts/Library/UM/ENG/acronisum.pdf As I said, I've only done this from 1tb to 2tb so I don't know how well going to smaller drive will work.
