geforce 9800 gtx+ vs radeon 6850

so i am planning to upgrade the system my brother uses since it has a pentium e2200 2GB of ddr2 ram, and a geforce 7100, and i found those 2 gpus what would be better for the price the 9800 gtx+ is $30 while the 6850 is $50

I think the 6850.

6850 for sure, its DX11 compliant.

The 9800GTX is only DX10 or 10.1 afaik.

i found a radeon 5850 for $20 would the 6850 still be a better deal?

Between the 5850 and the 6850 I'd choose whichever has more Vram, the 5850's were 1gb models, the 6850's were as well.

BUT if one has 2GB vram, get that for sure.

 

Between them two, the 5850 is a TINY bit faster specs wise, but the 6870 has better internal tesselation and such which bridges the gap making them almost equals again.

it doesn't say the amount of vram for the 6850, but my brother mainly plays minecraft so 1GB of vram should be fine

Sapphire/MSI/Powercolor? (With that I could do a google search to find out if its 1gb or 2gb)

Commonly tho, it would be a 1gb card as that was the norm of the times.

XFX did make a 2gb model as well as 1gb models..

Kinda hard to tell without knowing what yours looks like, but its most likely a 1gb card.

Either way, For Minecraft your good either way, and if its a 2gb card, thats a bonus.

There may be a sticker or two on it... (Near the PCIE pins at bottom usually) and at the end of the model number it may have a 1 or a 2, usually indicated the Vram model.

IE: XFXd5850OC1GD translated to XFX 5850 OC 1GB

I am pretty certain by that look of it and what I've seen by searching its a 1gb model.
