R9 290X or R9 390?

ImstillLeaTheTechWoman

290X is faster, but if you need VRAM get the 390 (though there are 290X 8GB versions available, but they're usually more expensive)

if clock for clocks

the 290X will be slightly faster

but the 8GB of VRAM on the 390 is juicier

and lets not forget better cooling on the 390 vs the original 290/X uncooled VRAMs and VRMs

390 have better cooling and 290x is just slightly like really slightly below 5 fps difference in 1080p. and 390 has better cooling means it can oc slightly better than 290x and result in same performance but 390 have 8gb of vram.

Nah it depends. Sapphire 290X Vapor-X has great cooling, so does the Tri-X. 290X is basically a 390X minus 2-3FPS. It's faster than a 390.

but to get a 290x vapor-x in my country will cost your more than a 390. actually kinda close to a 390x alrd giving that it has 4gb less vram and also slightly higher tdp.

There is some tweaks for the 300 series for it to run more efficiently and oc better from various benchmark i read. While i can't explain why since even the reviewers have no idea why it can oc better. But getting the 290x vapor-x if you can get it at a lower price point sure as hell is a very good deal.

The chips are binned in the 300 series. Either way, one of the users on this forum here tested his R9 290 vs R9 390 cause he owns both, the difference when both were overclocked high was 2-3 FPS so these cards are practically the same in terms of performance, provided you don't get very unlucky with the chip

My 290X can surpass 1200mhz on the core for instance, that's beyond stock 390X level of performance

holycrap you are having a super good binned card right there. My 390x pass 1210 test and i tot it is a miracle and only 390x can do that. didnt know 290x can too. but most of the 290x that i saw on benchmark barely cross 1170 for some reason only msi one pass even the matrix platinium from asus and vapor-x is doing 1175 max.

I'm using a 1150mhz core/ 1450mhz memory overclock when I game with only +44mV voltage. If I add some more, I surpass 1200 without any issues

That is why I recommend people to get the 290X's before they get sold out, cause they're no longer in production, amazing cards that often cost around the price of a GTX 970, I have the MSI Gaming one, it could have a bit beefier cooler like your MSI 390X but oh well, at least it overclocks great and I paid around 3/4 price of a GTX 970 here in Poland for it ^^
