390x. overkill for 1080p?

masked106

Hi guys. A mate of mine is building a pc and is using the MSI R9 390x for 1080p. Is this slightly overkill?? I know it would last longer than a 970 which I have been considering getting lately, but I've seen how AMD really pulls ahead of NVIDIA over time considering a 290x is better than a 780ti nowadays. Any body with a 290x able to help with this topic?? Or an owner of an AMD card in general??

Go for the R9 390 instead. I has only 3-5 lower FPS than the R9 390X and is much cheaper.

My 970 (OC'd to 1491/7400) couldn't even max out (with maxed AA and literally everything maxed out) GTA5 and FC4 in 1440*900. 390X will be nice and certainly faster than my 970. Besides, with the less resolution, it will last longer.

NEED X58 BOARD WITH SATA3 ASAP

Nah its fine, and means he can maybe upgrade his screen, or completely max out AAA games and should last some time

no such thing as overkill with graphics cards

I consider GTX970/390 performance a perfect GPU for 1080p gaming (More than you need usually, but when SHIT PC Ports happen, you have the brute force to run them better than most people on more midrange GPU's)

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

390X is not an overkill card IMO

you can set everything to ultra

and dont forget VSR

so you can run 1440P or 4K on the 1080P screen

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

I have a 290X and I don't find it an overkill. My resolution is a little higher than 1080p cause it's 1200p but still. It's a great card, if you can, grab the 290X cause they're about the 390 price point and they're faster.

i have one and playing it on 1080p. Overkill? it is a slightly yes. Since 60 fps is very constant across various game and well, i underclock it even since i dont need that much horsepower but i bought it because im upgrading to 1440p soon so even if it is slightly overkill i will still recommend to get it. Nice card. super nice temp for my msi version so cool that i forgot about ppl shitting amd for hot temp.
