looking for new desk speakers

Jaybird

Im looking for new desk speakers. ideally I would prefer best price to performance for the pair but can be persuaded to spend a little more. I am not sure if I want to just get a set of powered speakers or if i should get passive and get a dac and amp to go with. mostly just trying to figure out what speakers to get right now and can decide on dac and amp later. I have looked at the audioengine a2+ but they look like more smoke than fire. right now i am using a pair of $15 logitech speakers i got from amazon. so i absolutely need an upgrade.

200$ for a pair of speakers wont be enough money for it to even touch those headphones it will sound really bad compared the the vmoda's I mean if you really want one. A logitech Z506 is nice even for surround gaming

I dont need surround. just a pair. also i am kinda aware that i am sort of low balling it with $200 but i figure if i went in low i could get a better price to performance pair of speakers. I know i could just get a pair of studio monitors for $1000 but really i dont need that.

The JBL LSR305 are $100 per speaker right now. Pretty much a no-brainer.

No (convenient) physical volume control, though, be warned.

hmmm. not bad. but each speaker needs a power plug. not to keen on that. im kinda out of outlet space and im already using to power strips. I did see that there was this deal on amazon. I know it can be bought cheaper if bought individually.

Negative. That would be a major fire hazard. Just get larger power strips if you can be sure the combined current draw doesn't exceed 80% of the outlet rating.

Yup LSR305s are my vote as well. You can use this or for a little more you can get a Micca OriGen to use as a preamp to control the volume.

The Schiit Sys is another option. Kind of overpriced for what it is, but it does give you the ability to switch between two inedpendant inputs on the fly.

so Ive already got an A/B that ive built myself, however by going with an focusrite scarlett 2i2 I can effectively have the same thing with a bit more function down the road. i.e. adding a propper mic.

Why would two smaller strips be a fire hazard?

I don't see where the OP implied they would use "smaller" power strips. Regardless, not a smart idea.

Now I'm curious, why it is not a smart idea? I've been doing that for years and it works out fine for me.

It increases the potential for overloading the circuit because there are physically more places to plug in appliances. Not guaranteed, obviously, as that is contingent on what you actually have plugged in.

There are some other factors to consider:

  • The circuit may be supplying other outlets, decreasing the headroom available on any given outlet. Depending on the circumstance, you may not have knowledge or control of what else is on the circuit.
  • Poor quality power strips and especially extension cables may have a lower current rating than the circuit, resulting in an overload without tripping the breaker. Quality power strips have over-current protection built in.
  • Along with the above, damaged or corroded conductors and cables can increase resistance, again resulting in overload without tripping over-current protection.
  • Overloading electrical equipment may result in fire and death.

i was suggesting daisy chaining. which i am aware this is a terrible idea.
