Movie maker vs After Effects

Go to solution Solved by ALwin,

First of all you can't compare AE and Movie Maker.  Secondly, what were the codec and bit rate settings in both programs?

If all settings were the same, then the one with the higher frame rate should normally produce a larger file size.  However if one program was set to use a higher bit rate or a different codec that compresses less, then that one will produce a larger file size.

Additionally you should use Premiere for editing videos, After Effects is Adobe's motion graphics and special effects editor.

The problem you have with the quality of the video after editing is most likely due to the settings you used for export.  A good codec should not reduce the quality too significantly, even if it compresses the file.

I would also recommend you try out Lightworks Free, DaVinci Resolve 12 Free or Hitfilms Express 3.

I didn't know what to call this topic but it does relate to the title. I am sort of puzzled. I have used movie maker and after effects to render the same video but after effects rendered the file at 59 fps and movie maker rendered the file at 29 fps. BUT movie maker's rendered file was ~200mb in size whereas after effect's rendered file was ~60mb in size. ?!?! Can someone explain to me how this result came to be, because from what I know, if you have a video with more "frames per second" and the two files are identical in lengh (seconds) the one with the higher "frames per second" should be a larger file.

Another question I would like to ask is which is better for small videos involving 2 minute max gameplay, so far i have been using shadow play to record gameplay and have used movie maker to edit it, but the quality of the footage is not the same after being edited (Both in fps and detail). After effects after a few tries has produced footage with the same fps but still doesn't make a video that has the same amount of detail that I witness being shown on screen when playing a game. So which one is better for editing, and is there any way to make sure that files are not compressed ( I am guessing this is the reason for the decrease in detail ). And lastly is there any editing/recording software that you would recommend?

Thanks in advance.

Adobe Premiere is better for editing. After effects is 2.5d compositing software and it's best your shot per shot work, while premiere is great with multi shots scenes. If you have both you can transfer shots from premiere into after effects and edit them at the same time while in sync. The fps and size difference is in the setting. Doesn't matter what software its the codec which will show what is the speed and how much it will take up
