Home Server $2000

Go to solution Solved by Redicat,

@Redicat Any reason you recommend this build? I love the case, is any reason you chose the GD07 over the GD08? I am mostly wondering about the CPU and RAM. Everything else looks great, I am surprised the PSU is the same price as the one @brob recommended. Whats the difference between the P2 and G2, besides the wattage and 80+ cert?

No P2 G2 are like you told only by platnium (P2) gold (G2) the rest is the same Japanese caps all their protection stuff and whatever...

Yeah ur right there atually was a newer case so here yo go...

The other CPU didnt had Intregraded GPU this one does..

I am would like to  build a new Home Server for under $2000. The main usages are for Plex, Teamspeak, and File Sharing. I plan on putting Win 10 on it because I am most familiar with this OS and it has Storage Space. I consider FreeNAS but I am not sure if I could use it properly.

I have put together a Build, but need help confirming it will work. Also I am not sure about the MOBO, these are always tough for me to spec. I know the PSU is probably overkill, but I plan on putting a 4K Graphic Card out once they become more available in low-power, so I added a little more Wattage. I dont need it for gaming just movies. I am also considering a SIlverstone G08 rack case, what do you think?

Please let me know what I can change and where I am wrong. Any help is appreciated.

I would suggest a few changes.

Go with an ssd for boot/system. Drop the hybrid drive.

If the plan is to put the hdd in one or more RAID arrays, use hdd designed for that use.

No idea why one would put a high-end gpu in a file/media server. Even so, a 750W psu is much more than needed. I would suggest an excellent 550W unit which is quite capable of supporting a powerful discreet gpu should it ever be needed.

Brob, What do you think of using a m.2 for the OS is there an advantage over SSD? Then have a Hybrid/SSD for everyday software. Then use the NAS drives for storage.The reason i like the hybrid is I get the storage of HDD but the temp speed of a SSD. Any reason you dont like Hybrid?

No ECC, from what I have read it is good for FreeNAS but otherwise not need for what I am doing. If I was running a business off the server, yeah it would be a good idea.

nevermind about the m.2, the price is not worth saving a sata port. I ll just buy a expansion card if I need more Sata ports.

Good thinking re M.2. It's nice but not worth the price in a home server.

The ssd portion of hybrid drives is relatively small, generally around 8GB. If server file access patterns are that heavily concentrated, the server will normally have most of the data cached in memory rendering the ssd cache moot. It's my opinion that hybrid drives are really only suitable as system/boot drives when an ssd is not possible.

@Redicat,

The build has a max draw of less than 300W. Why a 750W psu?

@madcar86,

Not sure why the build in post #9 shows the P2 at $79.99, pcpartpicker is currently listing it at $99.99.

Because its pritty cheap and he likes an overkill PSU.

Its LTT yo... sale is over if he didnt bought one he's fucked yo...
