Hahahahahhahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahaha...............!

No.

EDIT: We can't give you a yes or no answer on this. Look up GPU comparisons for a graphics card you're interested in. There are plenty on YouTube so... take your pick.

depends on the gpu ......

The recent AMD cards aren't as hot as they once were. - There were also some really hot Nvidia cards.

The temperature on both isn't really an issue if you buy an aftermarket cooler card, even without one they're pretty good.

Get the one that you want ( in your price range) with the features you want.

Maxwell has a rather efficient architecture leading to lower temperatures, thats what theyre referring to.

Usually people who automatically say "Go for Nvidia for cooler temps" generally don't know what they're talking about. They're the same people who will go onto Nvidia's Facebook page and act like anything Nvidia posts is a gift from god.

AMD has vendors that offer excellent cooling solutions. Yes, Radeon cards run hotter than Nvidia cards most of the time, and yes their reference coolers are absolute garbage. But that does not mean there aren't good coolers from different vendors like Sapphire that can keep the cards under control.

not necessarily cooler temps

AMD cards do have a higher TDP, use more power, and create more heat, but if you have a beefy aftermarket cooler you can get lower temps than an nvidia card with a mediocre cooler

when comparing the exact same cooler and cards with similar performance yes the nvidia card will run cooler, but usually AMD cards have larger aftermarket coolers to compensate for that

even without a larger cooler, the temperature is only a few degrees difference, not a big issue unless you have some restricted case airflow

It's not necessarily true.

Off topic, but in Anandtech's tests, the 970 is faster than the 390 in the games that I play.

Nvidia cards run hot as balls. At least my EVGA GTX 980 does, and my case has good airflow. It even has an aftermarket cooler on it and it still pumps out heat like no tomorrow.

Finally a bench test I can agree with. I run at 60c with my 390 tops playing Fallout. It's usually in the 50's.

The 970/390 thing is getting kind of old. FPS don't mean shit if you have dips.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

why my R9 280 was new and not broken it maxed at 68*C with 37% fan speed and averaged 65*C - now it's maxing at 75*C @ 40% fan speed since it's going to die at some point

Exchanged my MSI 390 for a MSI 970 today, i could have just been unlucky ofc but my 390 would hit 80 during gaming and 85 while running valley, that was with the fans running at 50-60% which to me was just too loud and too hot.

I wouldnt say that the 970 runs much cooler, i dont have my 970 yet so cant talk from personal experience, but the 970 seems to run wee a bit cooler overall, but the most important thing i was looking for was a silent card, the 390 from msi had to run quite a lot faster to keep the card cool, rpm and fanspeed differ more than i thought from card to card.

For example the 290 im borrowing right now at idle runs the fans at 20% which equals 1200rpm, my friends msi 970 while gaming reaches around 50% fanspeed which is only 1100rpm on that card apparently.

50% fan speed at 1100RPM is lower quality motors usually - companies cheap out where they can

The fans on the club3d card im borrowing right now seems alot cheaper than the msi ones tho, as long as i can get a card that runs decently cool at low rpm im hapoy :)

cheap motors = lower RPM = more noise = Gigabyte

Of the 970 cards, the MSI just seemed like the best choice overall, i would imagine the fans on it are near identical to the 390 i returned, just needs to work a little less :)

What is your case?

C70. 9 fans. 1 140mm and 1 120mm SP intake fans top front in push pull over the cage. 1 120mm AF intake fan bottom front. 1 140mm SP intake in the bottom. 1 120mm AF exhaust fan in the back. 4 120mm SP exhaust fans in the top in push pull over the radiator.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

So the Gigabyte card is noisy? :) I were pretty much looking for the best combo of performance vs noise, the MSI still seemed like the best choice, dont like the fact that it doesnt have a backplate, but i guess i can always buy a custom one if i really want that.

the 970 doesn't have one? Is it only on the 380/390? Odd - I guess the cooler on those is beefier.

Nope, not sure why, but i guess they thought the 970 and 980 didnt need one. You can get custom made ones like this http://www.coldzero.eu/msi-gtx-970-gaming-pcb-11/2000-msi-gtx-970-gaming-pcb-11-layout-3-1.html, but rather pricy.

As I was suspecting - they cut-down the 970 cooler or rather, beefed up the 390 cooler. If my assumption/theory is correct then expect the same level of noise as a working (I am 99% sure you had dry fan bearings on the 390) 390.

Could be, my 390 just ran really hot and therefor had ramp up the fans quite a lot, i could keep the card at 75 under load with the fans at 70%

Not sure about the db meter, but my 390 at 50% fanspeed sounded like this one does at 100%
