Is windows 7 outdated?

I'm downgrading back to windows 7 after couple months of using windows 10, I'm just wondering is windows 7 outdated?

by outdated i mean will it stop getting hardware support? driver support for games? software support? And how long will windows 7 last before i need to upgrade back to windows 10?

Mainstream support ended on 13 January 2015.
Extended support ends on 14 January 2020.
 
So yes, Windows 7 is outdated and is pretty much no longer supported.

Ever since windows 8 came out it has been outdated

Sad but true.  The issue for me was driver/software support.  If you end up getting a new piece of hardware/software, you might have to jump through hoops to get it running on Win 7.  This was my experience.

damnit, i guess ill keep windows 10. I also struggle with hardware/software support for windows 10, its still new and barely getting drivers from manufacturers. I just hate going back to 8

Technically, Windows 8 and 10 have eclipsed it.

 

However, extended support for it won't die for another four years. It's still viable to use it, but the clock is ticking.

its not the latest and greatest OS-wise, but it certainly isnt old and forgotten either.

It was.. it ran fine with me on a c2d laptop with 3gb ram

I had a lot of crashes in applications, and couldnt even play a lot of my favorite games, using 2GB ram on a desktop (although maybe it was 4, i cant remember)

Although some of it was fixed in the first service pack, and almost all of my problems went away in the second one it still was a step down from xp at launch

The only improvement i saw with it was the music player, which was dope as fuck, and some features of the theme, like being able to see a live preview of a window when you alt-tabbed.

Not true. End of mainstream support only means no new features - which really haven't been coming since SP1 anyway. Windows 7's update support will be the same until 2020 as it has been since SP1. Mainstream support refers to new features and things like free telephone technical assistance.

 

Windows 7 and 10 are basically the same experience at this time, and using both, I find it mostly comes down to whether a person wants hard-angled corners or rounded corners on their software application windows - and Windows 10 has a less accommodating start menu, in my opinion.

 

Also, Windows 7 has better compatibility with older games, and it will receive Vulkan support, which will accomplish the same thing as DirectX 12. So Windows 7 is not outdated, as it accomplishes everything that Windows 10 does, and regarding some things, accomplishes it better (the start menu, older games compatibility).

 

The people who think Windows 10 is somehow better to have than Windows 7 are probably people who get excited about a new phone OS version update, and then after getting the update, do nothing but text and browse on their phone in the exact same manner as before. And there is less difference between Windows 10 and 7 everyday usage than there is between Android 4.4 and 5.1 everyday usage.

 

Also, gaming performance is not really better on one or the other, and the fluctuating differences in max and average FPS between the two OS are mostly negligible.

 

Ultimately, Windows 10 is attractive because of posterity for future use. But really it's virtually the same as Windows 7 in terms of present capability and practical usage (though some things are harder to do on Windows 10 than 7). However, there's a psychological value to some people, which leads them to think Windows 10 is somehow an important difference than 7. In the future, it probably will become one, but right now most of the difference is merely psychological within people who think that there is one just because it's newer.

Every new hardware being released comes with drivers for Windows 7 just like they come with drivers for Windows 10. There is no difference in this regard. I haven't had a problem with getting hardware to run on Windows 7 since I got Windows 7, because there's always been Windows 7 drivers for everything. This isn't changing any time soon - Windows 7 still has the largest install-base, and therefore is a priority for driver manufacturers, every bit as much, if not moreso, than Windows 10 is. Eventually Windows 10 will become the main priority, but at best it's simply as equal a priority right now as Windows 7. And in a lot of cases, Windows 10 is less of a priority for software manufacturers than Windows 7 - such as when it comes to supporting the OS' gaming capabilities.

 

For a long time still to come, there is more likeliness to have troubles installing older hardware on Windows 10 than installing new hardware on Windows 7.

Not at all. I know a bunch of people who still use XP. I use 7 and it is the best windows. Also Vulkan API will make you never think twice about upgrading to Windows 10 for DX12

Every new hardware being released comes with drivers for Windows 7 just like they come with drivers for Windows 10.

Yes, the vast majority of new devices will have Windows 7 support.  But really, all it takes is ONE piece of hardware/software.  If

you can't run everything you need on your OS it starts causing problems, as you have to make compromises.  That's when it's

time to start thinking about an OS change.
