Is it worth it?

Go to solution Solved by Mug,

right, but will the lower noise and temps be significant?

no.

People don't water cool because it's the best option for disposing of heat, they water cool because it looks good.

If you really want function, zip tie a corsair H60 or similar to your graphics card and get something like a BeQuiet Pure Rock for the CPU. Temps on the graphics card will be the same and on the cpu within a 10% difference.

I am planning a high end build for mid-2016 (I7 6700k and dual 980tis)

(Case is 780t)

for cooling, i initially planned for the Kraken x61 and EVGA's Hybrid cooler on the GPUs. this came out to roughly $300.

(EDIT: for the GPUs, i am subtracting $600 for base price)

Then i looked at custom loop, involving Zotac's arctic storm 980ti (sameish price as the hybrid) EK's Supermacy EVO CPU block, dual 360mm rads, and a D5 bay pump/res combo from EK.

that totals ~$700 before tubing and fittings.

Planned loop:

AKIdQPV.png

gotta love MS paint.

Blue = rads, red = blocks, yellow = pump/res and tubes. arrow is flow direction.

is putting an extra $500 into the custom loop worth it over the closed loops?

also, for fan config, top rad will have 3 120mm venting out (push), front will have 3 120mm venting in (pull), 2 120mm fans on bottom (in) and a 140mm on back venting out.

i need these fans either way, so ignore their price.

theres no way that zotac artic storm and other components come out to around 700$, that gpu is like 750+ alone, and Performance will be 3-5 degrees and maybe a bit more from regular AIO water cooling and most likley 10-15 from air cooling, but costing s ton more.

Are you using crossflow rads?

because normal rads dont have the fittings on opposite sides, they have them on the same side

for the GPUs, i am considering the price difference between a normal air cooled 980ti and the ones with the water blocks.

this build has been designed off of looks a considerable amount.

I'm going with either the Kraken + Hybrid coolers or the close loop, the difference i price will be ~$500

^^ you should never cheap out on a open loop either...

it'll be a horrible mistake if you do, you should honestly consider a higher budget so you can afford some nice components.

If your heart is set on it, well look into getting these GPU's... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121997&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC-_-pla-_-Desktop+Graphics+Cards-_-N82E16814121997&gclid=CjwKEAiA7MWyBRDpi5TFqqmm6hMSJAD6GLeAQ3MDZccv23629sG0wx91_e72fISCk-aufDjGrIahQBoCdj_w_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds they're ready to be water cooled out of the box.

Four Thousand dollars... good lord that's a expensive build.

Personally I wouldn't spend more than three thousand on a custom loop build.

Not really,

By using rads blowing air out of the box removes heat from inside and not allowing the heat to circulate around inside allowing the waste heat from effecting other components.

Using a rad has also been shown to reduce heat removal by 10% and more effectively. The coolness factor for water cooling went away sometime ago.

*edit

This is obviously more effective if you OC rather than not of course.  ;)
