DDR 3 with Intel Skylake i5 6500 do they match!

Hi,

Hope you're doing fantastic!

I have choosen this components for my new budget (cheapest) build for price to performance. I could not find any contradiction between these parts on their specs. However, since Skylake Memory Type says DDR4 I am wondering are they backward compatable? Because 1151 mother board supports DDR3 RAM such as the one I choose!

Will I lose a huge performance by going with the DDR3 one? I want the Skylake performance and in the mean time also save money as much as possible.

Thanks very much. Here are the components. Please feel free to give your advice.

I will be doing heavy gaming occetionally, I hope this will be enough for that. :)

If the motherboard supports skylake processors then it should work. There is very little difference between ddr3 and ddr4 outside of specific workloads like video rendering.

So from my research to use ddr3 memory safely with a skylake processor it needs to be a low power kit. So you need to find a stick of memory that is 1.35v or lower I believe. The reason for this is the memory controller is built into the cpu and skylake cpu's are built for ddr4 which runs at 1.35 and lower so if you run a higher voltage you risk burning out the memory controller on your new skylake cpu.

Edit* DDR4 ram is like STUPID cheap right now, why would you even want to deal with potential complications from using ddr3 when you could get faster and lower power ddr4 for the same price. 8gb of really decent ddr4 is like $40 right now on newegg.

DDR3 is 240-pin DDR4 is 288-pin, you cannot use DDR3 in a DDR4 board or visa versa, while the memory controller on the CPU does support both it is the motherboard manufacturers that decide what ram is used on the motherboard.

Here are some DDR3 skylake motherboards:

http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/motherboard/#s=30&L=3&sort=a8&page=1

As for the DDR3L you can use 1.35v ram such as:

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/mushkin-memory-996988e

There are others but it would take some time to search them all.....

Now in the same way Haswell was based at 1.5v but could handle 1.65v, Skylake is based at 1.2v but can handle 1.35v for overclocking any higher and you risk damaging components and stability.

With all that said I don't see why you wouldn't go for a DDR4 board if your buying a 1151 socket motherboard anyways......

Thanks very much Vendetta! It seems I should switch some stuff, maybe will go with the 4th gen CPU and motherboard or wait a bit. Because in my region (Bangladesh) DDR4 supported motherboard and RAM are not cheap yet. For example one single 8GB DDR4 RAM is equivalent $85!!! And this goes for all the other component.

Thanks again for your explanation it prevented me to make a possible mistake and taking an unnecessary risk! I will wait a month or two till the DDR4 components becomes main stream in here. :)

Thank you gt403vyl! Your information is very helpful. I am considering to go with the DDR4.... :D
