I currently have a fx 6350 with 8gb 1600 ddr3 ram, for christmas Im looking to get a gtx 970, but I believe my cpu isnt sufficient. For around $300-$350 including motherboard, what would be the best Intel combo? I might be able to go a little over budget. Also is there a big difference between the new skylake like the 6600k and the older flagship i5? Thanks

Fx-6350 | Asus Strix GTX 960 2gb | Asus R5a97 2.0 | 2x4gb Vengeance ram | Corsair CX750 | Corsair Spec-03 | Seagate 1tb 7200rpm HDD | Sandisk 120gb SSD |

Any of the older 4th gen i5 (Haswell) will do. What are the specific CPU and motherboards that you've looked at so far?

With Haswell an i5 4440/4460 (refresh) would be fine.

well, there are mobos designed for ddr3 and skylake,i suppose they have some sort of regulators in order to be able to function

They do not.

can you be a little more specific? there is a reason for them to exist, for people to migrate over to skylake platform without the need to change their current RAM setups by that time

Memory controller is on the chip, the voltage that DDR3 runs at is 1.5-1.65v, and DDR4 is 1.2v. The higher voltage that DDR3 runs at is bad for skylake CPUs memory controller and degrades the processor faster. The DDR3 motherboards are just for the manufacturers to get some money from people who don't know that, and have DDR3 ram they want to use.

4690k with a Z97 board. Should be about 200-230$ for CPU, and 100$ish for a Z97 board.

It would be on compatible motherboards, as it runs at 1.35v, but it is probably still a bit too high, but should be alright.

This or a 4690k/Z97 would both be fantastic choices. I would personally go with this one for the four extra threads.

i5 4690k or i5 6500

At pretty much the same price, which would be a better option to go with for gaming, the older i5 thats unlocked, or the newer skylake? Also how much of a difference in gaming would the 4690k give? Thanks,

These were the two options i was considering http://pcpartpicker.com/p/8mQmTW   ,   http://pcpartpicker.com/p/ds3BhM

Big difference in the stock clock and a good overclock. That said you're subject to the silicon lottery as to how much of an overclock you get, and you'll need an aftermarket cooler to take advantage of that potential. But, overclocking is fun as fuck. So I say 4690k

If anyone asks you never saw me.
