Hi guys!

I'm just wondering if I can still use a non-K motherboard to overclock the G2358, specifically the ASUS B85M-Gamer (not the B85M-G version) which im opting to buy.

Yes.

Many motherboards got updated to support G3258 overclocking, and IIRC this is one of them.

It's because the power delivery on most H81 boards and the like aren't really designed for pushing processors, but because of the low power of the G3258, you can.

 

True. My G3258 was stable at 4.4 GHz on a cheap 3+1 phase H81 board. I thought Microsoft pushed out an update that completely disabled overclocking on non Z-series chipsets though. Has that been fixed? I don't know because I don't have my G3258 running a Windows system anymore (it's in a FreeNAS box now).

go to wallmart. Buy a 2 USD clock. Put the clock over the G3258 and you're done!!! It is overclocked.

That would be underclocking the G3258.

I still wouldn't recommend getting a G3258 without a good quality Z-type motherboard just because while the G3258 is super baller, you really should think about upgrading to something better later on down the road.

I'm just wondering if I can still use a non-K motherboard to overclock the G2358, specifically the ASUS B85M-Gamer (not the B85M-G version) which im opting to buy.

I've got a 3258 running 4.4 (at 1.4v) on a b85 mobo 24/7 but that's as far as it'll go. Works great but when i put it in my z97-a it'll run 4.8 all day, same voltage no problems.

If it was for me I'd get a z97 instead. You can get them for around 80$usd or less. Only reason i put it in a b85 is cause its my gf's pc and i got a killer deal (90$ cpu and mobo)
