Scrap yard wars: The Linus community edition

Pretty sure this has been done before. And why does it have to be my pc what?? this makes no sense why would you have 2 ssd's they dont add performance only price.

You spent a lot on those fans if you were trying to save everywhere as you can get great fans for 9 bucks with sales, and decent fans about what you have for 6 bucks a piece and you paid 13 a piece

They are not even the same size, so most likely one for games and the other for OS only

I use the 128gb for OS and random programs. The other SSD is for my very small library of games.

I just wanted to see what people actually spent on their own PC, and what kind of performance they're getting for their dollar.

That's a super unbalanced build if it's made for gaming.

Honestly. You'd be hard pressed to get this kind of hardware for what I paid. I promise you, you would end up a few hundred dollars over what I spent if you tried to build this with the exact specs.

That is true, but I think you got a lot of used parts, seeing as your 256gb is cheaper than the 128gb one, the mobo is 80$, you got a 390x for 166$, the PSU is 74$ when its usually well over 100$.etc  (wait. HOW DID YOU GET A 390X FOR 166$?)

I just fixed the SSD prices. I mixed the two up while editing the PC part picker. The 256 was $84, and the 128 was $56. They were both lightly used.

PSU was brand new OEM bulk repackage. Mobo was used for 1 month by an acquaintance. He got rid of it for next to nothing because he got it new for next to nothing.

The 390x was the interesting one. I posted it on this LTT forum a while ago. I RMA'd a 280x and got back a brand new 390x. Spent $166 on the 280x. So yeah...

I edited the list. Wrote new or used on the parts.

I know the 960 sucks balls. I was just giving examples of what people spend their money on.

I spent half MSRP on the PSU, GPU and Mobo, and saved a lot of money on the other components. The only ones that I paid full price for were the fans and RAM. How exactly is this bad price/performance.

I just made a pcpartpicker with my exact parts at full retail price. I saved nearly $600. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Z2ZGQ7

How is that horrible? I saved over 30% off retail value on the entire build. $1089.93 vs $1619.58

Honestly. You'd be hard pressed to get this kind of hardware for what I paid. I promise you, you would end up a few hundred dollars over what I spent if you tried to build this with the exact specs.

Yea, but if you're gaming you could do much better for the same price.

It's the story of the mac pro. No you can't get the exact same specs for the same price, but you can get different specs that achieve the same thing for a lower price. or different specs that achiever better performance for the same price.

I get what your saying. The i7 is overkill, but it was 25 bucks more than a 4690k.

And the GPU. If you can find a GPU under $170 that outperforms my 390x @ $166, then you win.

I get what your saying. The i7 is overkill, but it was 25 bucks more than a 4690k.

And the GPU. If you can find a GPU under $170 that outperforms my 390x @ $166, then you win.

It's not about getting a better gpu for less. It's about saving money in all the other places (like the 25 from cpu, 8gb of ram, all the fans etc.) with all the money saved you can more money to put in the GPU and get something like a 980, or a used 980ti.

Okay, so let's say i saved half off fans, that's 45. Plus half off ram, that's 50. Plus 25 off the cpu. Plus the 166 i spent on my brand new 390x. (Had a 280x, RMA'd it. Got back a brand new 390x as a replacement)

That's 281 bucks total. Tell me again how to get a 980 or a 980ti with that money??

There's no other significant amount of money to be saved after what you suggested. That is unless i stuck it inside a shoebox and used shady parts. Asus maximus VI is good for 87 bucks, h100i was 30 bucks off and is good, Seasonic SS-850km3 is unbeatable for 74 bucks brand new.

And fyi, the 390x is more or less equal to the gtx 980. And no, I'm not biased. I own both a gtx 970 and 390x. So I DID in fact get something relatively equal to a gtx 980 for 166 bucks. Hows that for price to performance.
