Upgrading to Skylake

That is it, black friday is coming, and I am ready to get an i7-6700k, MSI Krait Z170-a motherboard and some DDR4 RAM... With that said, how long do you think the Z170-A/LGA-1151 chip set will last and is it worth it or do I die waiting for dx12 to be implemented in most current gen games that will come out.

I don't think you should upgrade. The performance benefits are not that much better than current gen. You should just buy the ram but other than that I don't think you should buy anything else.

it'll last for 5+ years, but depending on newer applications/gaming could

shorten the upgrade cycle. also, depends on the time frame intel has on

the newer processing nodes of 10 and then 8nm manufacturing. by hype

from intel, possible 3 years before new mobo/processor changes.

But it appears that he'll be upgrading from an fx-8350. That would be a worthwhile upgrade.

There is a huge difference in gaming between the fx 8350 and the 6700k

The 6700K is gonna be a big enough jump to justify the purchase. Now if you said 6600K, I would've said "hold out for the i7"

he's upgrading from an 8350... of course he'll see a massive performance jump.

 

I think you should do it :) It'll last you more than 5 years for sure.

You could probably reuse the 8350 and get your money's worth out of it. Slap a 750 Ti and a PSU and bang, backup rig.

yeah, depending on what is already invested in the FX, waiting to recoup the

most amount would be now (6 months ago, really). if you paid retail, then prep

to sell, otherwise, if you are sparingly going to repurpose it, i don't see the "value".
