I know this has been asked a million times. The comparison is not completely valid because both of these are meant for use in quite varied scenarios.Xeon is not as good for gaming as, say, the 5960X octa core.

But how good is the 5960X as a server? I am faced with a requirement for a server that can support 2 users(excluding admin). The workload will be somewhat demanding featuring the likes of using web-design-level graphics editing, considerable use of access, excel. can i use the 5960X for that?

Was watching this video by linus. why not have it all in the cloud. would like to know whether its better to go with the cloud when one is starting out as opposed to buying all the hardware and consequently having to deal with a lot of IT work(am good at that but still is a lot of hassle upgrading and tuning and...)

The difference is that i7's can be overclocked (if unlocked) and have intergrated graphics.

The Xeons usually are cheaper if looking at the low end, but lack these two features. However what makes Xeons better for servers is their ECC memory support. I dont exactly know what is better about ECC RAM (maybe someone else can tell you more about it?), but I know this is preferred in servers.

Yes, the 5960X can handle two clients.

If you want more customers though, I'd go for a higher core Xeon.

He means LGA2011 i7 vs. LGA2011 Xeon. But yeah you have a point.

ECC can prevent crashes, where normal RAM would not. It can be incredibly important for data servers which run 24/7, as a crash can cause any number of issues. The longer a system is running, the more errors it is likely to come across, which is where error correcting RAM is useful.

ECC Memory is server grade and comes in much higher capacities

I think theres a single stick with 512GB on it.(ddr4)

Only server grade CPU's can handle and also you get a crap ton more server grade features on a Xeon then i7

An i7 is a consumer grade processor it can come with a maximum of 8 cores currently. A Xeon is a workstation processor designed for the best possible performance. It can have up 18 cores and even multiple CPUs (yeah you read that right) . You can have up to 4 CPUs in your system. They are basically the best if the best when it comes to processors. They cream of the crop. And therefore they're expensive as hell and unless you absolutely need them. Don't buy them.

Also, Xeons tend to be lower voltage, and that reduces heat output by a significant margin although the core count can be much higher.
