1600MHz vs 1866MHz vs Higher MHz (RAM) in gaming?

I would like to know, does it matter if your RAM is 1600MHz or higher in terms of gaming? Like does it effect performance or?

Thank you

Unless you're using an APU, no.

There have been rare exceptions where games have had large FPS boosts from faster RAM, notable cases are with Ryse: Son of Rome, and Fallout 4.

Other than that, you're looking at about 2% more FPS with faster RAM (like 1600 to 2400)

System specs
  • Graphics card: Asus GTX 980 Ti (Temp target: 60c, fan speed: slow as hell)
  • CPU: Intel 6700k @ 4.2Ghz
  • CPU Heatsink: ThermalRight Silver Arrow Extreme
  • Motherboard: Asus Maximus Viii Gene
  • Ram: 8GB of DDR4 @ 3000Mhz
  • Headphone source: O2 + Odac
  • Mic input: Creative X-Fi Titanium HD
  • Case: Fractal Design Arc midi R2
  • Boot Drive: Samsung 840 Pro 128GB
  • Storage: Seagate SSHD 2TB
  • PSU: Be quiet! Dark Power Pro 550w

Peripherals

  • Monitor: Asus ROG Swift PG278Q
  • Mouse: Razer DeathAdder Chroma (16.5 inch/360)
  • Mouse surface: Mionix Sargas 900
  • Tablet: Wacom Intuos Pen
  • Keyboard: Filco Majestouch Ninja, MX Brown, Ten Keyless
  • Headphones: AKG K7xx
  • IEMs: BrainWavs S1

If you're cpu limited, you can potentially have a noticeable difference, if you're gpu limited, you'll see no difference at all. Most of the time, your money will be better invested somewhere else, if the faster ram is only a few bucks more, I say get it, but don't spend a lot on it.

depending on game.

Ryse - Son of Rome LOVES fast RAM...

go watch the video Digital Foundry released.... sure between 1600 and 1866 it wont be much

between 1600 and 2133 it was an average of 5 FPS....

how much do you pay to get 5 FPS from a GPU or CPU if you are NOT overclocking your existing one?

thats right, you buy a higher tier GPU or CPU... which even if you sold your old hardware, still gonna cost you way more then the 10 bucks it costs to get 2400MHz RAM over 1600MHz RAM

To add to that - in Fallout 4 the diffrence between 1600MHz and 2400MHz is 30-40% IIRC

except they are misinforming you.

it is highly dependent on the game. If your motherboard supports faster RAM; spend the extra 10 bucks and get a 2400MHz kit. It is worth the 10 bucks by far

*MOST* games don't see a difference between RAM speeds. (Happy now?)
