So, I was going to get an Athlon x4 860k 4 core. But my friend said that another kid in my class built a gaming PC with a quad core AMD CPU and he said that the games were laggy and got horrible FPS. What should I do? My friend (kid who did not build computer) said I should get a 6 or 8 core AMD. I find it stupid to pay $180 for a 3.2GHz quad core Intel while I can get an 8 core 3.9 AMD for $145. What should I do?

For gaming, an i5 is superior to all AMD CPUs in the $150 price range.

The 3.2GHz quad-core Intel chip will outperform a 4.0GHz 8-core AMD chip. Don't pay attention to those numbers too much, they only mean something in the context of that specific CPU's design.

Your friend probably didn't set up the AMD cpu manually/overclock it so yeah it will be shit, AMD suffer from poor single core performance but if you know what you're doing you can reduce the placebo effect. Intel are great for plug in and forget about it, most people don't even set up their ram properly when setting up AMD builds.

Oh boy. Where is Faceman's thread when you need it.

Currently, MOST games like (by like I mean run better on) very strong cores. Intel has that and AMD doesn't. Because of Intel's stronger cores, gaming is smoother on their architecture and noticeably slower (depending on the situation) on AMD processors.

That being said, if you can get an i5, even the cheapest one, get it. If not, the 860K is fine for most games. I use it right now and it runs great with my 7950.

Actually, here it is fam
