Vizio TVs security flaw

The cautionary tales just keep coming for Internet-connected TVs, thermostats, and other so-called "Internet-of-Things" devices. Today's lesson comes courtesy of a smart TV from Vizio that was subjected to a man-in-the-middle attack because it couldn't be bothered to validate the HTTPS certificates of servers it connected to.

 

Not surprised at all that a TV manufacturer is so blatantly ignoring privacy, but the compete incompetence from the software engineers is amazing. Why choose to use secure HTTPS communication protocols but then disregard PKI completely, which is worse due to assumed security/trust, and implement rather archaic hashing with the secure server salt stored on the client. Leaving the key in lock?, Post-it-note of the pin above the alarm panel?

Not surprised at all that a TV manufacturer is so blatantly ignoring privacy, but the compete incompetence from the software engineers is amazing. Why choose to use secure HTTPS communication protocols but then disregard PKI completely, which is worse due to assumed security/trust, and implement rather archaic hashing with the secure server salt stored on the client. Leaving the key in lock?, Post-it-note of the pin above the alarm panel?

My current HDTV is a "dumb" TV - I specifically bought one that didn't have smart features because I was using an HTPC with it anyway.
