Hey Linus Tech Tips,

I'm probably going to get a 390 or a 390X GPU for my rig since my 270X is lagging behind in terms of the performance I want. I've contemplated shelling out the extra cash to get the 390X so I can overclock and tinker around with other stuff on it however I'm not sure whether it's really worth it or not. What do you guys think?

390 overclocks a better and the performance difference with the 390X is very tiny.

Can you even overclock a 390? I'm not super knowledgeable about the intricate technical details of GPUs and CPUs. From what I thought it was the 390X that you would be able to overclock.

Why wouldn't you be able to? All modern gaming graphics cards can be overclocked.

Yes, I have mine at 1100MHz without a voltage increase. Runs at 70c while playing Witcher 3.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

In NL the 390X costs €100 more and delivers 10% (Often lower) better performance than the 390. (Base clock, so non OC) for both

It depends if you think if the €100 extra is worth the 10% performance boost.

1440P:

EDIT:

In my opinion it is not, Im gonna pick the 390 for my build in a month. (3440x1440 monitor)

EDIT2: The reason why I didnt mention the 980 and the 980ti is because they are in a different price segment.

I wasn't aware of this. What is the difference between the base 390 and the 390X exactly?

But if your budget is €700 you could go for a 980Ti but I would still recommend the 390 and upgrade next year when the Nvidia Pascal series release (And if they are good obv)

The youtube channel I linked in the post above are quite good in creating benchmarks so if you want to compare other graphics cards I would defineltley recommend them

The 390x has more shader cores than the 390. Which is like a 10% increase in performance.
