SLI/Crossfire vs Dual GPU Cards

OK I always hear people (Linus) rant about running two separate cards in 8x 8x being a bad thing....

Is this different to running a dual GPU card in a 16x slot?

What is the difference?

Performance: Dual GPU cards are generally underclocked.

Power limit: e.g. 8+8 pin compared to 8+6 pin x2

Space: Dual GPU just need a single PCI-E slot, SLI/CFX needs 2

SLI/CFX looks at better too!

The 16x and 8x is the bandwidth of the slot. Currently, there are no cards that are fast enough to fully saturate either connections so there's no difference.
