I'm sorry for not knowing but, what exactly is DLC? I hear the term being thrown around amongst my fellow PC Master race friends all the time but I never actually took the time to understand what it means

DownLoadable Content, like maps, skins, extensions to the story, etc.

Downloadable content. It's like an add-on.

Games these days feels like the add-ons are already made prior to game release but game developers purposely sold them separately for extra profit.

I know you didn't ask but you probably will soon ask what a "Season Pass" is. So considering they gave you the answer to DLC here's the answer of Season Pass.

A Season Pass is a combination of many individual pieces of DLC. Usually this contains most or all DLC for a game and usually costs anywhere from half the cost of the game to the full cost of the game. It is designed though to save you some money compared to buying all individually and can also contain several weeks early access to said DLC.

That's literally what is happening though. Companies are too afraid to raise the price of games past $60, so they had to come up with an underhanded way to extract more than $60 from consumers for the exact same product. The solution was creating a full game, then removing 20% of it and selling it back to the customer as "DLC".

Some companies are just notorious for DLC bs. They should learn from CD Projekt, people love them for Witcher 3. I got my copy for free for my brother's GPU but still- right now, I can get a copy way below $60 and that's including 16 add-on contents.

Also, I buy games that I probably won't play but getting a 'Game of the Year' editions.

There are some companies that do DLC "correctly", but a lot of games ship with day 1 DLC, which is just fancy speak for "pay us more than $60". Remember Evolve?

Honestly I very rarely bother with DLC. I usually start to get tired of games toward the end, so the idea of paying more money for more game is usually not an appealing one.

I think it started from platform exclusives and perhaps store loyalty programs, you get something extra in-game or a t-shirt irl if you get a game for xbone/ps4/pc and or get it from a specific retailer. And the rest is history.

Downloadable Content, DLC....

It used to be fine but now it's getting really annoying.

DLC is like an extra content for a game, it can be free but it can be paid. Without having the DLCs you might not have full gaming experience, like not completed cars, guns, missions, etc.

Gaming companies nowadays just separate almost everything and sell them separately (this is DLC) to get $$$.

Game that has lots of DLCs for example is The Sims 3, these "Expansion Packs" and "Stuff Packs" are all DLCs.
