Building an old PC

So i have a very good gaming pc, two 980ti's, an intel 6700k all water cooled. But iv been getting into alot of older games and keep running into problems running them on my rig. Iv managed to track down a copy of windows xp and was wandering what you think on buying old components so i have the actual hardware they designed these games to work with

could you not just make a VM?

Just some used stuff will be enough. Like Scrapyard Wars style. Q6600 and 750Ti.
