Hi so i was getting the components together for a fallout 4 build for a friend of mine and i was wondering since the recent discussing of gameworks what to go for ?

and its mainly the 970 vs 390 here since the 970 costs 320 and 390 costs 350 (euro's)

This guy is planning to mod the SHIT out of fallout 4 when mods come out so the extra 4,5 gb of vram is nice to have for the 4k texures and such.

he runs 1080p and wants to play at ultra and doesn't record.

its going to be paired with a i5 4460

if there is anything else that you guys need to know, ask,

Thanks in advance

You would think Ubisoft would support the Bulldozer based architectures more given their digging themed names like bulldozer, Piledriver, Steamroller and Excavator.

Get the 390, I've used over 5GBs of VRAM on Skyrim with a mix of 4k and 2k textures.

Fallout 4 is said to be using nvidia gameworks so keep that in mind (not confirmed yet from what i think) also with the vram, unless you are getting a ton of insane mods, you should be good.  Just saw the modding thing, well that is a variable but 4gb vram should be fine but i would ask someone with experience.

The 390 outperforms the 970 most of the time. We don't know how the game will handle each card - it should run like normal with the 390 ahead by a bit with the 970 trailing it.

But this is Bethesda we're talking about. The game is more than likely going to have some shitty things about it so we don't know what's coming.

It's actually confirmed.

If he's going to mod it, tell him to get the 390, as the 970 only has 3.5GB of VRAM, compared to the 390's options of 4GB and 8GB.

Gameworks is one thing. But heavily modding usually means high vram usage. And that's pretty hard to say since there might be a mod that will replicate this effect for both brands.

I am going for the R9 390 since the gameworks you can turn off and mods is something thats there and can't be replaced and its a pain in the butt if he runs out of vram since that will tank the fps REALY hard :)

Thanks for all the replies

I dont see the point in "heavily" modding it, the game looks to be great in the features and graphic departments.  However, a mod or two for graphics and more for features would make more sence.

In the op it states "modding the SHIT out of fall out 4". Features and Graphics are just barely scratching the surface.
