So I'm a junior in high school, all of my friends have their driver's licenses. I don't because my parents (or at least my mom, don't know about my dad) wanted me to buy my own driver's ed classes, which are like $100 (at minimum). Well all my friends have jobs too, and I am unfortunate enough to not have a job, even though I have looked for one, even went to an interview and never got a call back (and I'm still searching). I need my driver's ed classes to get my license by the end of this school year, and I know how useful driving is outside of school, since I live in Texas and my school and anything remotely urban is not within walking distance. I don't know if I should ask my dad if he will pay for it. I know it's only $100 but that seems like a lot to ask for... Should I ask him?

Take the bus?

I get rides with my friend in the morning and the afternoon, but I feel like I'm mooching off of him...

And a car has uses besides going to school. The amount of times I have to ask my dad to take me to Home Depot or something is ridiculous.

Well, you should talk with your parents about such thing and not just ask it out of nowhere.

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

You know public transport?

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Not to mention that bus isn't a lifetime solution :/

Just give a try and ask, you're going to need it in the future anyways.

On it.

Edit: Well that went better than expected. He just said talk to my mom so I can get signed up, he said there's no reason not to.

What kind of bullshit parenting is that? No money > can't pay for lessons, need job > no car or license to drive to work > no money

Like, do they not see the conundrum there? I don't know about Texas, but in NJ you need 3 driving lessons. What's so hard about forking over $300 so their son can be more independent. Did they forget that you being able to drive means they DON'T have to drive you places anymore? That should be a huge motivator.

I already asked he said he was okay with it. I need to get back to the place I applied and ask about my first day as well, it's been like 7 weeks now and they haven't emailed me when I start (even though they were supposed to).

Edit: Thank god I'm not the only one that saw the problem with a job.

Did they actually hire you? Like did you get a formal job offer? I know its a small part time job but maybe you don't want to work in a place where it takes 7 weeks just to get someone on board. Though to be fair you should have been proactive about it and nagged them until something got done...

At least your parents came around. One thing I can't stand is when parents impose stupid arbitrary limitations on their kids that serve no purpose for either party.

I'm sure they did. I (wanted to) work at Kroger, and if they hire you they put you through a drug test, which I did. They said they would email me when I start, but it was a couple weeks later since they interviewed me so I emailed one of the hiring reps, now it's been 7-8 weeks and I still haven't gotten a reply, let alone when I start. So what am I supposed to do? Email the rep again?

That'll end up being more expensive than classes for driver's ed. We don't have a bus system down here, especially not cheap ones. And I'd still have to walk several miles to the bus stop.

I guess that's what taxes are for..

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Bus companies down here are privately owned companies, I don't think Houston has a public bus transport system.

Well yea.. the taxes are so low there CANT be a pub transport system. Raise taxes and all your issues will disappear..

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Hell no, a public bus system here would be terrible. The costs would skyrocket since the distances between any two locations is ridiculous. I'm pretty sure they have one downtown, but not here in the suburbs where I live.

Well the taxes in Canada are WAY higher than here in Texas. I'd prefer to keep it that way too.

But if you raise taxes you wouldnt be having this dilemma.. and you would have free healthcare.. and the homeless would be gone (except for the druggies)

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Still, it's better to be able to drive than have to take the bus everywhere. That, and I don't pay for my healthcare (not yet at least), and I don't really care about homeless people, they're homeless for a reason (probably because they dump cash on drugs or don't want to work), but it's another thing if they're disabled or something.

Let me put it this way:

your 911 rescue volunteers are dying because you refuse to provide healthcare and they cannot work because of the injuries they have gotten from saving people.

And there are people that are homeless because YOUR system allows for companies to put profit over people.

and here is something else to think about

you have a very popular TV show that revolves around a teacher having to make meth because he can't afford healthcare

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

K, well I don't want this to get political, we obviously have differing views.

Agreed.

Umm do you have to take driving classes? Can't you just learn from your parents?

It used to be that way, but I was born a couple years late. I need driver's ed from a licensed instructor (which can be my parents, but they have to pay for the license anyway).

Wait I'm confused, a drivers license costs 100 bucks or what?

Here in the Netherlands a drivers license costs 1600 bucks easily unless you're a very good driver.

The required driver's ed classes cost usually $100. You need 6 hours or something of class time plus pass the permit test to receive a permit, then you have to wait six months, complete the required driving time during that time and then go and take your driver's test for your license (and pay like a $15 fee or something). After that, you're set until you're 18, then you go and get it renewed, also for a fee.
