Crossfire/SLI Real benefit ?

Hi!

I don't know much about Crossfire/SLI real benefit, but i do know that it is not supported by the majority of the games and  apps running on 1 or (2) monitors.

People with 1 or (2) monitors go for it and i think it is a total waste of money, IMA.

What is the real benefit?

In my experience with 2 different SLI setups in the past few years(780 SLI and 970 SLI), it works phenomenally and I had almost zero issues.

I saw scaling from upwards of 80% more performance over 1 card in most games at 1440p.

 

A lot of people here like to put down SLI and I'd venture to say A LOT of them don't have any first hand experience with it.

I actually can't think of a game offhand that I've played which didn't see benefit from SLI. I'm not sure what you're talking about when you say most games don't support it.

I had the same experience, the only games I ever found that didn't support it were usually really old and didn't need SLI to run past acceptable FPS anyways.

I have heard that on a single monitor, having Crossfire/SLI on most of the games don't do any difference....

Crossfire and SLI needs 2 GPU's to do anything lol, it's a multi-GPU technology, where it uses both graphics cards together to provide more performance.

I never said i was using sli/crossfire!!! I know what it does!! (the ram is not shared for sure btw).

My point is, do they really share averything else??? like computing/processing...ect... ??

 

 

I have the R9 270x having another one to crossfire is the same price as a GTX 970..... is it worth??

SLI or xFire in theory should double the performance of any games you're playing. That's what they advertise it as. But it doesn't really double irl.

 

I just tried SLI for a few weeks and I have to say that I am very satisfied with it. Although there's things like microstuttering you have to deal with. Other than that, it actually lets you crank the dial on the graphics options in games.

 

And of course, to quote linus, "I know it's shallow, but multi-gpu setups are sexy."

I have had no issues with my multmonitor setup, it CAN cause issues  but all 4 of my displays are plugged into the primary card so no issues come up for me.


At the end of the day it is slightly inconsistent, but most games you will see some improvement of some kind over one card

That being said being the performance is inconsistent frankly it only makes sense if you have a top tier card as far as im concerned and even then you dont have ebough FPS.

If your card is lower end...just get a new more powerful single card.

This is not at all true. if you have the high enough refresh rate you will see a difference, whoever told you that has no damn idea what they are talking about

I went from about 60 fps in bf3 to 100+ and this was before I went multimonitor.

I would love to know where you heard that because by that logic running multiple GPUs on a 4k monitor makes no difference which is hilariously incorrect. A large majority of games support SLI and Xfire to some extent, the amount of benefit varies from game to game based on developer and driver optimizations but overall there aren't many games that don't support multi GPU setups. There are cases in which a game will launch with poor or no SLI/Xfire support but that can be improved later via optimizations and drivers and on most games support for it is improved over time.

 

The benefit of Multi GPU setups is power plain and simple, when one GPU won't do you add more. You're opinion of it not being worth was formed with wholly inadequate information and it could have been rectified by simply watching one of the numerous videos about it from Linus Tech Tips.

 

These or any of the videos that show benchmarks for single and multi GPU setups would have shown you what it is and how much of a difference it can make.

 

 

 

 

I would think that you would have gone and looked for any videos on the subject from LTT considering that you posting on this forum of all places.
