X79 vs X99 stability

mc86

Hi all, I want to start a custom X99 build next month, but I've heard it's not as stable as X79. Can anyone share their X99 experiences with me? I want my computer to be powerful, stable, and future-proof in terms of upgradability.

Thanks!

My setup:

Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor

Asus X99-A/USB 3.1 ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard

Cooler Master Nepton 240M 76.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler

Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory

2x Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

Western Digital BLACK SERIES 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

EVGA GeForce GTX 980 4GB Superclocked ACX 2.0 Video Card

EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

Cooler Master N400 ATX Mid Tower Case

Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer

TP-Link TL-WDN4800 802.11a/b/g/n PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter

I had some issues with X99 and my SOC Champion, ended up returning it because the BIOS was buggy as hell and sometimes it wouldn't even boot at stock settings unless I cleared CMOS first.

@Gofspar was also having some issues, idk if anyone else has had any issues though.

I used to have X79 a few years back, it was flawless for me with my RIVE and 3930k.

Get X99. It's perfectly fine. However if you can get a 4790k+Mobo for $300 that might be a better deal. I have the Asrock X99 extreme 4 which works fine. Overclocking X99 is really easy. You don't even need to use the bios too much

I agree.  Second build you posted.  But go 5820K instead of the 5930K, and get a single 500Gb SSD instead of two 256.

Tell my tale to those who ask. Tell it truly; the ill deeds along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly.

Apparently the CPU does not sit properly in the ASUS x99 sockets causing stability errors or something of that manner (TekSyndicate did a video on it a while back). Personally something like that on a platform that should be almost completely stable based on what it's target audience is for is unacceptable and I personally would not invest into it for that reason.

A shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist.

I originally had the 5820K in mind, but I'd like the option of installing a second graphics card later on. I may just end up going that route though.

For the SSD, I should have mentioned I'm planning to turn it into a hackintosh, so I have 2 drives: 1 for Windows, 1 for Mac OS X.

A 5820K is perfectly fine with a second GPU. It's when you start running 3 or 4 that you need the 5930K.

Oh, cool. I was worried that the 28 PCI-E lanes would create a bottleneck if you add a second card, since they require 16.

That's interesting, because heaps of people over at Overclock.net are running 5820k's in Asus Sabertooth's, Pro's, Deluxe's, RVE heck even X99-A, there has be major motherboard revisions since X99 was first released, like the addition of USB 3.1 now, there was a shortage of x99 board for a few months as this was happening.

I don't know where that video is, I spent a while looking for it (I'm a avid Tek Syndicate watcher), but the 5820k and the 5930k both have the same layout underneath.

The 5820k won't bottleneck 2 cards, I'm running 2 GTX980ti's there is no frame rate lose running at 8x, heck my wife's 4790k machine gets the same frame rate when I put both cards in there, they don't require 16x, they are rated up to 16x, the newest cards don't even use the full bandwidth of 8x.

4.3Ghz overclock on my 5820k as well, a full 1Ghz over stock

Interesting also, I assume they might have taken that video down after those revisions were put in place because it might have detoured people away from x99 (as it did for me) but now I fell much better recommending it and possibly even using it in the future. Thanks!

I went with MSI because of a bigger issue with Asus, which seems to still be plaguing the x99 range today.

The massive voltage spike on startup that is killing CPU's, there has been BIOS's released to fix it, but it still happens sometimes on higher overclocked machines.

I've owned nothing but Asus boards for years, but that made me go for the MSI x99 Gaming 7 board.

Won't flood the reply with links, here's a good one on ROG's own forum:
