AMD 8320 Overclock Up to 5 GHz Help !

I am using MSI 970 Gaming's OC Genie with 3.9 GHz and i want to make an overclock at least 4.5 GHz with my AMD 8320 cpu.

 

I got Thermaltake Water 3.0 Performer with 2 120mm fans on it also have 7 other fans in my case.

 

The problem is i dont know anything about it and i want to do it from bios with manuel without using apps like Afterburner or etc.

 

I dont even know what to do with voltage.

 

If someone can help me that would be great!

Yeah 5ghz will kill that board, you need like a Crosshair V Formula or a 990FX Sabertooth if you don't wana rape the board.

that board should not be subjected to OCs over 4.5-4.7GHz

 

for 5GHz you need a

ASRock 990FX Extreme 9 (12+2 phase)

ASUS 990FX Sabertooth R2.0 (8+2 Phase, military grade)

ASUS ROG Crosshair V Formula (8+2 Phase, LN2 capable)

 

any other board i would be careful with. Motherboard longevity would be heavily reduced or pushed beyond its limit.

that board wont handle a 5ghz OC.

First of all , only a handful of boards can handle 5 ghz cpus , and they are all 990fx.

Second , you'll get a higher tdp as the fx 9590 at those speeds , as that chips isnt as good of a bin.

Third , there's no guarantee you'll even be stable at those speeds, hell the 9590 itself isn't perfect.

 

What psu are you using ?

You'll need a really good power supply to power such a rig , if it even works.

 

BTW: attempting to OC that high will simply kill your build and potentially your cpu and the voltages required will significantly reduce the lifespan of your chip.

PLEASE don't try to push that chip on that board. MSIs capacitors on AMDs boards are soo bad it will probably legitimately go up in flames. I wish I was joking about that but I'm not.

Your expectations are way too high considering the fact that you own a ''bottom of the barrel'' FX-8320 and a cheap 6 phase socket 970 motherboard man.

1.45v is the max i would send through that board for daily use, if you render long videos or do other things that will max out the CPU for prolonged period of time (not gaming) then it might even be lower than that.

But 1.45v your result will vary depending on the quality of the chip you got, it being an FX-8320 it's certainly not that great of an overclocker but it should be relatively stable at anywhere from 4.2ghz to 4.5ghz...your hopes are way too high if you wanted a 5ghz AMD CPU you'd have to buy a top end 990FX motherboard and an FX-9370 or 9590. Anyways the difference from 4.2ghz to 4.73ghz is very negligeable and mostly un-noticeable across the board from my experience...all you get is more heat and power consumption.

So, try a multiplier of 21 first at 1.4v and see how it goes...if it look stable try 22 and then 23...if it crash check your temps and maybe increase voltages further if needed but i would stay within 1.45v on that board like i said.

What psu are you using ?

You'll need a really good power supply to power such a rig , if it even works.

Okay i got that i cant get 5.0 GHz also as Dildors said my psu is xigmatec vector 80+ 750w

then i hope i can get 4.5 GHz from this board and chip but i need some help for that.

it really depends man... saying a 8320 is "flat out a bad overclocker" is a bit meh statement.

 my old FX did 4.4GHz on stock voltage... and after that it needed quite a bit to hit 4.52GHz..

 

but yeh... he should have gotten a 8350/8370 to have better hopes of reaching 5GHz

depends on the CPU...

 

generally (according to google) you should get between 700 and 900 MHz OC on your average 8320, using only stock voltage (just upping the multiplier).

However, if you got a bad chip, that will take more voltage.

 

 

If i were you, i would open up Catalyst Control Centre, and use the CPU Overdrive to automatically OC the CPU as far as it can go (according to AMDs own software). then dial it back 100-200MHz from that result to achieve a stable and safe speed/voltage.

i owned what i consider a ''great'' FX-8320 myself man.

mine was doing 4.73ghz at 1.52V and it was ALMOST stable...4.5ghz was a more realistic figure for it though and it was stable at that speed but that agin required A LOT of volts...my board was better than his though.

yeah well, i had the Sabertooth board... and i didnt bother to push past 1.475v... even though i had a 280mm AIO on it, i could have gone past 4.52GHz,... i did get it to 4.7GHz at 1.475v... but it was kicking out way less heat at 1.4625 and 4.52GHz

Also, the difference between 4.4ghz and 5.0ghz is not worth even the added motherboard and energy cost alone, let alone buying a more expensive CPU!

You have to understand this CPU has a very low IPC to begin with, which means it can't process a lot of instructions per clock so ramping up the clockspeed will have very limited results in terms of performance increase...i remember doing the cinebench single-core pass my default score was 99 points and with a balls to the wall overclock to 4.73ghz i managed to get 109 points...you know this is 10.1% performance increase for a 20% overclock. In comparison haswell at 3.2ghz will push 130 to 140...that's the scale of things where talking about here, like...not even close.

Now 178 points @ 4.2ghz on this i7...this is a good CPU that is worth overclocking if you ask me.

it's like when AMD claim a 40% gain on IPC with Zen...heck yeah it better be...cause 40% of this is not much and is still fairly low overall...to match haswell per core performance on a clock for clock basis they would need like a 65% gain more or less.

weird, cuz my FX usually hit 114-120 @ 4.52GHz, depending on background task, and if i forced Cinebench to use a specific thread or not (the great bane of FX is that their threads does not have 100% equal performance... so a program using some bad, or all bad threads, will see way lower performance :|.... AMD didnt even manage to split a core in two properly)

you single thread run was very inefficient then.

Mine can max reach 4.7 at 1.5 if you go over 1.5v it will probably not last very long... :(

you single thread run was very inefficient then.

maybe it was 109 at stock and 119 overclocked i might remember the numbers wrong...my multi-thread score was normal so the single-threaded should fall in line and when i look at the spreadsheet for CB15 it looks like 115-120 would be more normal...but even then it still quite low considering the clockspeed and resulting heat and power consumption when compared to haswell.
